Thoughts on the 2009 Bordeaux Vintage, Brendan Lawson, Wine Buyer:

For the past few months, all I’ve been hearing about is the 2009 Bordeaux vintage. Every year I get a bit leery as it seems that the Bordeaux Wine Trade wants to celebrate the new vintage and declare that it is the best since the last great vintage. In this case it was 2005, and before that it was 2000, both being declared the “Vintage of the Century”. Early speculation about high alcohol levels proved to be unfounded with the majority of wines being between 13.4 and 14.1%. In 2009, the weather cooperated with the wine growers to create massive wines with intense concentration. However, in 2009 for all the hype that the vintage has been receiving, I noticed something almost unprecedented. Both the American and English wine critics are praising the wines from 2009, especially the wines from the Left Bank and Graves. Never before has this happened to the degree that it is now. I would encourage anyone interested to buy now, as it seems that the demand from Asia is through the roof this year and America is going to be receiving 10-15% less wine due to that high demand and the fact that one of the biggest American importers of Bordeaux has dropped out of the market. Due to the global economy the prices have been significantly lower than the astronomical 2005 vintage and many are predicting that after the futures are done the prices will go back up exponentially. Now is the time to buy and own some of these gems while they are still affordable.
