Marsanne, Roussanne, and Viognier grapes call the Rhône valley their spiritual home, but have found tremendous success in California thanks to a handful of pioneering wineries that have put these rich, robust wines on the map here in the New World.
Today’s release is one of the more refined and bold white blend offerings I’ve come across. Lot 676 2016 Santa Barbara County White Blend is a deft harmony of 24% Marsanne, 49% Roussanne, and 27% Viognier from one of California’s iconic producers of Rhône varietals. Grapes of each of the three varietals are grown in cool climate vineyards bathed in cold coastal breezes from the Pacific Coast, whole cluster pressed, and barrel aged to precise specifications before blending into sublime form right before bottling.
The white wine aficionados among you will probably fall head over heels, and even if you’re primarily a red wine drinker, this is a total game changer – if there was ever a white wine that would appeal to the fans of the big and bold reds, this would be it.
The classic Northern Rhône blend takes on a life of its own in this New World expression. The nose is immediate upon pulling the cork, and leaps out of the glass with vibrant pineapple, lemon meringue, and orange zest. Entry is redolent with apricots and citrus over a bed of butterscotch that carries into a long, and I mean long finish framed around bright acidity and continued waves of citrus and stone fruit.
