The Wine

Ask Robert Parker to name his favorite wine ever made, and there’s a pretty good chance he’d say 1961 Petrus. Parker gave this wine 100 points, a numerical symbol for unparalleled excellence. In Parker’s words: “An estate only needs to produce a handful of wines such as the 1961 Petrus to garner an international following. Not surprisingly, the 1961 Petrus was pure perfection…”

Petrus is located in Pomerol, and like most wines of this appellation, it is fashioned almost entirely from Merlot. These are not just any Merlot grapes, however. While Petrus has never been included in any classification of Bordeaux wines, it has always maintained a reputation for greatness and longevity. This ’61, from the most famous vintage of the century, is still eminently drinkable. In fact, this bottle may be in the prime of its vinous life!

Unsurprisingly, this Petrus is as rare as it is perfect, with single bottles selling on auction in seconds and unopened cases as sought after as the holy grail of centuries’ past. As befits a wine of this caliber, there are many imitators out there, and—even worse—many fakes.

Inspirato is proud to offer this exceptional bottle, along with authenticity documents and our guarantee of quality cellaring and bottle condition. Whether for a gift, or a personal indulgence, it simply does not get any better than this.

*Provenance & Condition: Given their authenticity and visual inspection, it is our responsibility to reiterate that a cellar this age always comes with a caveat emptor, so please beware that there are absolutely NO REFUNDS or RETURNS on this fine and rare collection.

Bottle Condition:

Label: Pristine front label and import strip label. No nicks or tears. No discoloration.
Bottle Fill: Upper Shoulder.
Capsule Condition: Minor scrape on back portion of capsule other than that it’s pristine.
Cork Condition: No protrusion.

Petrus is a made almost entirely of Merlot grapes grown in Bordeaux’s right bank Pomerol appellation. Although never officially classified, the chateau has long been considered on par with the First Growths from the left bank. The ownership of the estate has passed between the Arnaud family in the 19th century, to Madame Loubat at the end of WWII, and finally to Jean-Pierre Moueix in recent years. Petrus’s clay soil is rich in iron and the estate’s average vine age is 40 years. Chateau Petrus produces approximately 3,000 cases of wine each year.

The most legendary vintages for Petrus include 1945, 1947, 1949, 1950, 1955, 1959, and 1961, in addition to recent success in 1982, 1989, 1990, 1995, 1998, 2000 and 2003. Petrus’s flavor profile typically features aromas of ripe mulberry, black currant and spicy vanilla oak. The wine has incredible power, depth and richness which allow it to age for decades.

Pair with a decanter, the people you love, and a long, luxurious evening.

Wine Reviews

"Tasted 12 Times With Consistent Notes"

"The 1961 Petrus is consistently a perfect wine. Fully mature, and more evolved than several of its neighbors (i.e., the 1961 Latour a Pomerol), it offers a huge, sweet nose of ginger, mint, exotic spices, and gobs of jammy black fruits. Its extraordinary viscosity, sweetness of fruit, and heady alcohol level, as well as its remarkable extract, make for one of the most sumptuous, hedonistic bottles of wine anybody could ever consume. The color is revealing noticeable amber/rust, and the tannin has melted away. This decadent bottle of Pomerol is at its peak of maturity; drink it over the next 10-15 years. "- Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 100 Points

John Kapon:
The Greatest Petrus Tasting of Them All, 11/14/2012 99 points
(Petrus) Low and behold, the 1961 Petrus. It had been a while since I had had this legendary wine. I will never forget the one I had at Bipin’s super tasting about ten years ago, where I had four 99-point 1961 Pomerol experiences from Bipin’s longstanding collection. It was great to see it live up to that reputation yet again. This was a ‘wow’ nose, deeper and more complex than anything else we had encountered so far. Its fruit was black as midnight, and it got another ‘wow’ from The Hedonist. It was so deep and complex in the nose, with oil, forest and menthol aromas. The ’61 just stayed in my mouth forever. It was so fresh, I could see it lasting another fifty years easily. Rich, thick and incroyable, this was as delicious as it gets, and ultimately most everyone’s wine of the weekend (99).
