Jean Edwards Cellars New Location

Fall, 2010 Newsletter

As I write this brief newsletter we’re in the middle of crush – it’s time for a break and for some reflection on 2010 as much has happened this year…

THE WINERY HAS MOVED:

Earlier this year, the custom crush facility we use for production moved and the winery is now located on the Silverado Trail in Napa.  The facility is owned by Bill Hill and his own brands (Big Horn Cellars and Tetra) are produced at the winery along with several small producers like Jean Edwards Cellars.  The winery is located at 3105 Silverado Trail (near Luna Winery) on the southern end of the Trail.  It’s a really nice facility and much more convenient (allows for quicker transport and processing of fruit during harvest) – and it’s just great to be in Napa Valley.   If you’re planning a visit to Napa please let us know us — if we’re working at the winery and our schedules sync-up we’d love to share a glass or two of wine with you in the cave along with some barrel samples.  And, if we’re not working at the winery, there is also an adjacent tasting room (Silverado Trail Wine Studio at 3105 Silverado Trail) where are wines are often available to taste and always available to purchase.

2008 RELEASE:

Many of you have inquired about our next wine release — our 2008 wines will be released in the Spring (2011) to our mailing list members.  You’ll receive info in late-January/early-February regarding ordering.

Our Spring release will include two wines — our 2008 Jean Edwards Cellars Stagecoach Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon and our 2008 Jean Edwards Cellars "Seventy Four – Forty One" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.   We’ve recently tasted through 2008 and 2009 barrel samples of these wines and we’re pretty excited about the next couple of vintages. In barrel for nearly 24 months, our 2008 cabs will be bottled next week.  As we get closer to the release we’ll provide additional info and tasting notes on the wines.

We had planned to also release our 2008 Alder Springs Vineyard Syrah in the Spring but ran into some challenges with this wine.  As you will recall, in 2008 Mendocino County experienced fires that lasted many days – when we picked our syrah it seemed perfectly fine and we did not detect any noticeable impact of the fires.  As the wine aged in barrel the smoke taint started to emerge – we tried several ways to remove the smokiness but we were never happy with the results, felt the wine was not up to our standards and did not represent our brand or the vineyard well.   We have decided we will not release this wine for sale — it was a very sad decision for us both emotionally and financially but we know in our hearts it is the right decision.

ORDERS ON HOLD/SHIPPING:

We’ll be monitoring weather carefully over the next couple of weeks to ship any remaining orders we have been holding due to warm temperatures.  Credit cards will be processed when orders are ready to ship and you’ll receive an e-mail with order and tracking info.  If your ship-to information has changed please e-mail us as soon as possible.

2010 CRUSH:

Not going to say a lot about an ongoing harvest — but speaking of weather – was this a challenging year!!!  Cooler than normal temps, followed by heat spikes, followed by cooler than normal temps and rain. Smaller than normal yields – lots of sorting going on.  We’ll toast the harvest with a glass of single-malt when the wines are sleeping comfortably in barrel.

LOVE OUR LABS:

Many of our mailing list members write us about "the boys" and regularly follow their progress on our website… "Cooper" is our 1 year old black labrador retriever and "Sur Oaklee" is our 5 month old chocolate lab puppy.  Coop and Oak live at our east coast residence (so you won’t see them at the winery during a visit).  They are growing up so quickly and have really bonded well with each other (pretty much inseparable).  They are having lots of fun chasing leaves this fall and we can’t wait to see them play in the snow.

Back to harvest…   Cheers!

Karen and John
