If you’ve come into the shop over the past year asking for a Champagne recommendation, chances are you’ve already taken home a bottle (or three) of Aurelien Suenen’s intensely beautiful wines. If not, you’d be wise to pick some up while we still have them to sell. These are wonderfully composed Champagnes that manage to be both intellectually stimulating and irresistibly delicious. We have put them in the hands of Champagne obsessives and people who don’t think they have a taste for bubbles at all, and we always get the same enthusiastic response.
Aurelien himself is a real treat to be around, and we felt very lucky to have him to the store a few weeks ago to share his two base ‘14’s. His passion for creating wines that speak clearly of their privileged terroir in the Cote des Blancs is abundantly evident from the minute you meet him. His conversion to organic farming in 2009 stems from his deeply held belief that without healthy, living soils, it is impossible to express the true identity of a place. This is certainly an exception to the rule in Champagne, where process and brand are more frequent topics of discussion.
What we have in stock now is all that will be available until the next vintage, and given the buzz that Suenen’s wines have already begun to generate, we know they’re going to be increasingly difficult to acquire with each passing vintage. We’ve seen the progress that Aurelien has already made since taking over the family property and are immensely excited to watch him become one of the true stars of the region. In our eyes, he already is one.
The bottles below are offered on a first come, first served basis. Follow the links below to purchase on our site or call/email us if you need some assistance.
Cheers,

THE WINES

SUENEN – CHAMPAGNE, EXTRA BRUT BLANC DE BLANCS GRAND CRU, OIRY [2014 BASE] NV

24+ BOTTLES AVAILABLE

$64.95/BOTTLE

This is sourced from a number of Suenen’s plots in the Oiry commune, just to the east of Cramant. Aurelien is currently the only producer making a single village Oiry. More than 60% of the vines that make up this cuvee are facing north and don’t see the brunt of the day’s sun.  As a result, this is a piercing, linear and incredibly refreshing example. It’s a bottle that always disappears entirely too quickly and a perfect wine to pair with delicate oysters or sashimi, but it’s equally as useful all by itself to kick off a great night.

SUENEN – CHAMPAGNE, EXTRA BRUT BLANC DE BLANCS GRAND CRU, C+C [2014 BASE] NV

24+ BOTTLES AVAILABLE

$69.95/BOTTLE

From the Grand Cru villages of Cramant and Chouilly, these vineyards are east and south facing and yield a more powerful, spicy example of Chardonnay. This is more in line with what you’d expect from classic Grand Cru Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs – a richer, broader style than the Oiry. This wine has really come into its own since landing stateside, and the bottles we had open a few weeks ago were shimmering with class. This is a stunning wine that is nearly impossible to resist at the moment. It’s sure to continue to develop layers and layers of complexity the longer you can hold off drinking in the medium-term.
