Inside the cellars at Pouillon, via Schatzi Wines.
There are few more satisfying things in the wine world than a great bottle of Non-Vintage Champagne. While Champagne is by definition a somewhat pricey bottle, NV Champagne offers a more affordable entry point into serious bubbles at what is often a fraction of the price of their vintage counterparts. When the wines are coming from great producers, they definitely do not represent a fraction of the quality, and many of the best examples can develop beautifully in the cellar over a few years.
There’s no such thing as too much Champagne, especially this time of year, so we’ve picked out 8 bottles of our favorite bubbles today, all under $70/bottle. These are all impressive examples from both up & coming producers and standby sources. Whether you’re looking for a bottle to serve at a big party or something inspiring for a quiet night at home, there’s a bottle here for every occasion.
And while we’re on the subject, please mark your calendar for Friday night, December 7th, when we’ll be opening up a bunch of our favorite bubbles at the shop from 5:30-7:30. More details to come but we promise you won’t want to miss it!
The wine below is offered on a first come, first served basis. Follow the links below to purchase directly from our site or call/email us if you need some assistance.

THE WINES
In Alphabetical Order Below
GASTON CHIQUET – CHAMPAGNE, CUVEE DE RESERVE NV
24 BOTTLES AVAILABLE
Nicolas and his brother Antoine are at the helm of Gaston Chiquet, which we consider one of the most consistently outstanding grower champagne houses. The wine produced in largest volume is the Tradition, comprised of 40% Meunier, 35% Chardonnay and 25% Pinot Noir; the Cuvée de Reserve is the very same blend aged for an extended period of time in the cellar. This 2017 disgorgement is based on the 2010 vintage and was aged for 96 months on the lees. The result is a bold, rich wine with both red and citrus fruit flavors, a creamy feel to the mouthfeel and hints of brioche & butterscotch. An utterly satisfying bottle of bubbly and an incredible value for this sort of quality and complexity.
GOSSET – CHAMPAGNE, GRANDE RESERVE NV
12 BOTTLES AVAILABLE
Founded in 1584, Gosset count themselves as the oldest house in all of Champagne. Their Grande Reserve (43% Chardonnay, 42% Pinot Noir & 15% Pinot Meunier) is a textbook Champagne – toasty, generous and full flavored with notable freshness. A buttoned up, dependable bottle that is at home in any setting.
GUIBORAT – CHAMPAGNE, GRAND CRU EXTRA BRUT, TETHYS NV
24+ BOTTLES AVAILABLE
Guiborat is a small grower based in the Cote des Blancs, working just over 8 hectares, of which only 3 are used to produce their own wines. Tethys is 100% Chardonnay from parcels in Cramant, Chouilly & Oiry. It was not declared as a vintage wine but all the juice is from 2014. This is a Champagne that shows very fine lines from start to finish, a direct and driven style as pure as it is delicious.
LACOURTE-GODBILLON – CHAMPAGNE, BRUT 1ER CRU, TERROIRS D’ECUEIL NV
21 HALF-BOTTLES AVAILABLE
Géraldine Lacourte and her husband Richard Desvignes run this 8ha property based in village of Ecueil, in the Petite Montagne de Reims. The blend on this is 85% Pinot Noir and 15% Chardonnay. The wine shows laser-like focus and a lacy, nervy and high-toned character that’s especially impressive for such a Pinot-dominant Champagne.
MARGUET PERE ET FILS – ROSE CHAMPAGNE, SHAMAN (2015 BASE) NV
24+ BOTTLES AVAILABLE
This is Benoit’s entry level non-vintage rosé based on the 2015 vintage. It is comprised of 73% Chardonnay from Ambonnay and 27% Pinot Noir from both Ambonnay and Bouzy. Disgorged August 2018, Brut Nature with 0g dosage and 0 added sulfites. A bright, spicy, expressive & palate cleansing bottle of rosé from a luminary producer that always over delivers for the modest price.
PIERRE PETERS – CHAMPAGNE, BLANC DE BLANCS BRUT, CUVEE DE RESERVE NV
24+ BOTTLES AVAILABLE
This is a wine we bring in year after year, and if it seems like it is gaining in depth and complexity with every new release, that’s because it is. Rodolphe Péters uses a “perpetual reserve” to put this wine together. This involves blending 50% of the current harvest (2015 in the case of the wine we have available) with stocks of reserve wine that contain 22 different vintages at this point, dating back to 1988. Every year the reserve stock gains another layer from a newly added vintage. There’s certainly a consistency in how the wine is made, but each release has its own unique character. Terry Theise, Péters’ importer, describes his wines as “starched” and that palate-cleansing sensation seems especially spot on with this wine. It simply demands a second sip.
R. POUILLON – CHAMPAGNE, LES TERRES FROIDES BRUT 1ER CRU NV
12 BOTTLES AVAILABLE
Though the Montagne de Reims is most famous for its Pinot Noir, Pouillon’s wines make use of some special plots of Chardonnay as well. Terres Froides is all Chardonnay from a chalky, north-facing parcel that (as you might guess from its name) is an especially cool area. A vibrant, zesty BdB with some extra punch & drive from the classic base vintage, 2014. Pouillon is turning out breathtaking, thought-provoking bottles that should be on your shortlist of the most exciting grower-producers on the market today.
ROGER COULON – CHAMPAGNE, 1ER CRU L’HOMMEE NV
24+ BOTTLES AVAILABLE
This is a blend of equal parts Chardonnay, Pinot Noir & Meunier from 8th generation grower/producers Eric & Isabelle Coulon. This comes from vines planted in Vrigny & Pargny in the Montagne de Reims. Aged for five years before disgorgement, this is an instant classic of a Champagne – toasty, bright & balanced with great length & persistence.
