We’ve been talking a lot at the store recently about how irresistible we find well-made Chianti Classico and the 2016 rendition from Monteraponi is case in point. This is an appellation that is still perilously overlooked by the wine world at large, producing wines of excellent value that can deliver immense joy in youth and offer serious ageing potential for those who are patient enough to wait. Moreover, the 2016 vintage is one in which producers like Monteraponi were able to create seriously layered wines that far exceed expectations for this ‘modest’ area.
Monteraponi is a large estate with over 200 hectares of land centered in Radda in Chianti, but it embodies a very important aspect of Chianti Classico. Much of the property is still covered in forest, providing lush biodiversity that encourages the overall health of the land. Only 12 hectares are planted to vineyards, all indigenous varieties, in areas with warm southern exposure at some of the highest elevation in the appellation. Methods in the cellar could best be described as patient, relying on long, slow fermentations in concrete and extended élevage in very large, mostly old barrels. These aren’t wines that are polished or corralled into a certain style, rather they reflect the land they were born from without adornment or subtraction.
For those of us that have been enjoying the wines for years, the 2016 vintage comes as something of a treat. It is a vintage that has moderate alcohol well balanced against bright acidity, with plenty of ripeness in the tannins and plush texture on the palate. This is a seriously aromatic wine with heady notes of cherry liqueur and strawberries, cut by anise, tobacco, and hints of citrus peel. In time, more subtle tones of violets and rosemary come to the fore. This was wonderful right after we pulled the cork but will continue to improve in the cellar for up to a decade. It delivers so much class & complexity for the price and serves as a poignant reminder of the potential of this historic appellation. For those who don’t already share our admiration for a ‘humble’ Chianti, and especially for those of you who do, you’ll want to see why we can’t stop thinking about this special vintage from Monteraponi.
