THE WINES

LOPEZ DE HEREDIA – RIOJA, VINA TONDONIA RESERVA 2004

24+ BOTTLES AVAILABLE | 5 MAGNUMS AVAILABLE

$46.00/BOTTLE | $105.00/MAGNUM

spacer Manhattan Wine Company Update

"The 2004 Viña Tondonia Reserva is a completely different story. It is a worthy follower of the 2001, the greatest of the Viña Tondonia Reservas of recent times. It has the usual blend and usual levels of alcohol and acidity, bottled after six years in oak barrels. The nose feels savory (if that’s possible–umami?) and developed, with tertiary aromas and good balance between spices, leathery notes, cherries and balsamic notes of cigar box and incense. The palate is both round and crisp, with refined tannins. It has very good balance with subtle acidity and very good persistence."

DOMAINE DE BELLIVIERE – COTEAUX DU LOIR, LE ROUGE-GORGE 2015

24+ BOTTLES AVAILABLE

$39.99/BOTTLE

This is almost 100% old-vine Pineau d’Aunis with a tiny touch of Gamay. Pineau is a rare enough variety on its own, but carefully-crafted interpretations like this are almost non-existent. This is clearly Pineau at it’s finest. You might place this somewhere between Chinon and Chambolle. It’s bright and fresh with just a touch of earthiness and peppery spice. Don’t be afraid to lay this one down for a few years. This magical, enchanting wine has a bit of a cult following, so don’t be surprised to see them go quickly!

ROAGNA – DOLCETTO D’ALBA 2015

24+ BOTTLES AVAILABLE

$17.99/BOTTLE

"Tasted from tank just prior to bottling and then again right after bottling, the 2015 Dolcetto d’Alba is striking. Deceptively medium in body, the 2015 offers lovely palate presence and tons of intensity. Dark red cherry, blueberry, violet, mint and licorice all give the 2015 its super-classic flavor profile. Time in the glass brings out the wine’s breadth and power, but I would prefer to give the wine a few more months in bottle to fully come together. The Dolcetto was aged entirely in cask."

ROAGNA – LANGHE ROSSO 2011

24+ BOTTLES AVAILABLE

$34.00/BOTTLE

"Readers who want to get a good dose of the Roagna house style without splurging on one of the flagship wines should make a point of checking out the 2011 Langhe Rosso, Roagna’s young vine Nebbiolo cuvée. The warm vintage has softened some of the contours, resulting in a striking, old-school Nebbiolo that can be enjoyed upon release. Dried rose petal, spice, leather, licorice and dried cherry are some of the signatures. This is a gorgeous wine to drink now, as the flavors are a bit mature, in the best sense of the term. Dried rose petal, cinnamon, pomegranate and cedar add to the wine’s exotic bouquet. Even with the warm vintage, there is plenty of supporting Nebbiolo tannin and acidity. The Langhe Rosso is all young-vine Nebbiolo. 2/3rds from Pira and 1/3rd from Pajé."

ROAGNA – TIMORASSO, DERTHONA MONTEMARZINO 2014

10 BOTTLES AVAILABLE

$79.00/BOTTLE

"The 2014 Derthona Montemarzino, Roagna’s new Timorasso, is super intriguing. Luca Roagna gave the 2014 two full years in cask, with no lees stirring, all with the goal of maintaining as much freshness as possible. Lemon confit, almond, dried flowers, sage and chamomile shape this beautifully textured, phenolic white. This is an impressive debut from Roagna."
-Antonio Galloni

ROAGNA – BARBARESCO, PAJE 2011

10 BOTTLES AVAILABLE

$89.00/BOTTLE

"Roagna’s 2011 Barbaresco Pajé is dark, sensual and inviting. Black cherry, plum, licorice, smoke, scorched earth and menthol give the Pajé much of its dark, brooding personality. The ripeness of the vintage has softened some of the contours, but this remains a decidedly virile, imposing Barbaresco that will show at its best with a few more years in bottle. Layers of flavor build into the striking, baritone finish."
-Antonio Galloni

ROAGNA – BAROLO, PIRA 2011

7 BOTTLES AVAILABLE

$89.00/BOTTLE

"Roagna’s 2011 Barolo Pira is soft, open-knit and expressive. Crushed flowers, sweet red berries, mint, anise and sweet tobacco give the Pira striking aromatic lift and inner perfume. Gracious and feminine throughout, the 2011 will drink well pretty much upon release. A kick of tannin and acidity on the finish are reminders this is indeed Barolo, but the 2011 is quite accessible for a young Roagna wine. This is a terrific example of the house style."
-Antonio Galloni

PIERO BENEVELLI – BAROLO, RAVERA 2010

8 BOTTLES AVAILABLE

$49.00/BOTTLE

"Massimo Benevelli’s 2010 Barolo Ravera is dark, mysterious and brooding, with serious density in its fruit and terrific overall balance. Mint, sage, tobacco, spice and underbrush notes add nuance as this ferrous, intense Barolo gradually opens up in the glass. The 2010 can be enjoyed today or cellared for up to a decade. This is an impressive 2010 from one of Barolo’s most intriguing emerging growers."
-Antonio Galloni

GIACOMO CONTERNO – BAROLO, CERRETTA 2012

6 BOTTLES AVAILABLE

$225.00/BOTTLE

"Conterno’s 2012 Barolo Cerretta boasts superb aromatic presence, precision and overall silkiness, with seemingly endless layers of fruit that come from all directions. Freshly cut flowers, sweet red cherry/plum fruit, hard candy, spice and new leather lead to the pliant, silky finish. The 2012 might very well be the most precise, nuanced Cerretta yet."
-Antonio Galloni

MARQUIS D’ANGERVILLE – MEURSAULT, 1ER CRU SANTENOTS 2014

6 BOTTLES AVAILABLE

$115.00/BOTTLE

"The 2014 Meursault 1er Cru Santenots has a fragrant bouquet that retains those grilled walnut scents that I picked up on from barrel, though now they are augmented with hints of smoke and even baking powder. The palate is fresh and vibrant on the entry with crisp acidity, touches of crème fraiche, dried pineapple and citrus lemon. Moderate weight on the finish but it lingers nicely in the mouth. Enjoy this over the next 10-15 years."
-Neal Martin

MARQUIS D’ANGERVILLE – VOLNAY, 1ER CRU CLOS DES DUCS 2014

12 BOTTLES AVAILABLE

$219.00/BOTTLE

"Once again the wood treatment is quite unobtrusive on the understated nose that grudgingly reveals cool and ultra-pure aromas of violet, Asian-style tea, spice and a broad mélange of wild red berries. Like those of the Champans the superbly well-detailed medium weight flavors are intensely stony with the same sleek and polished palate feel that carries over to the impeccably well-balanced and hugely persistent finale. This isn’t quite as concentrated but it is indisputably more complete."
-Burghound

GENOT-BOULANGER – PULIGNY-MONTRACHET, LES NOSROYES 2014

6 BOTTLES AVAILABLE

$64.00/BOTTLE

A tremendous value Puligny from a site just below the famed Referts vineyard. This wine drinks well above its level and is a perfect introduction to the spectacular 2014 vintage. It’s deep and powerful but shows exceptional cut and grace.

$44.95/BOTTLE

spacer Manhattan Wine Company Update

This wine is set to arrive towards the end of the month.
"This estate’s second wine, the 2011 La Gravette de Certan reveals attractive spicy, cherry fruit, light to medium body, good roundness and softness, and a character not unlike its bigger sibling, just not as concentrated or dense. Drink it over the next decade."

-Robert Parker
