 Martinelli Winery Update

2019 Giuseppe & Luisa Zinfandel

Member Pre-release Ends on January 19th

Happy New Year!
We can’t think of a better way to kick off the New Year than with our annual pre-release of the 2019 Giuseppe and Luisa Zinfandel. We make this wine every year to honor Giuseppe and Luisa for being the first Martinelli family members to travel from Tuscany to Sonoma County, and settle down here as grape growers for generations to come.
We are so excited to offer this wine to you first, our loyal members, until January 19th.

Giuseppe & Luisa Vineyard

PLANTED IN 1996

The taste of it is so natural and wonderful that it might make you think it all happened by accident, without forethought. The Giuseppe & Luisa Zinfandel tastes like it is made from people living their lives in the warm California sun, doing what they love best.

 Martinelli Winery Update

The 19th century Martinelli Family Surrey
Giuseppe and Luisa Martinelli have left their footprints all over these hills surrounding the little green valley where they settled in 1889. I don’t know what Giuseppe and Luisa’s exact plan was when they eloped as teenagers from Tuscany to the Russian River Valley, but they remain as benchmarks to us of their love of the land and the joy of passing it on to the family they created.
The greatest footprints left to us Martinellis are the craggy grapevines on Jackass Hill. Besides the old grapevines themselves, the original winery and horse stables still stand, along with the old Surrey with fringe on top. Luisa took the Surrey out every Sunday to visit neighboring friends. Before she left she would leave a pot of stew to cook on the fire for her family. I believe my great-grandparents would smile greatly as to how these strong branches have twined their way through the generations that followed them.
Giuseppe & Luisa’s grandson, Lee Martinelli Sr. continues his grandparent’s dreams of a successful life growing grapes and making wine. At 81, he still farms the 65 degree slope we call Jackass Hill. In 1996 Lee Sr. planted the Giuseppe & Luisa vineyard with budwood from Jackass Hill.  Trained on a vertical trellis system with 2000 vines per acre, the Giuseppe & Luisa vineyard became the first Zinfandel vineyard of its kind.
Zinfandel is our family’s heritage wine. These old vineyards have been the Martinelli’s livelihood for nearly 14 decades, through World War I, World War II, the Great Depression, and Prohibition. My family is keeping a joyful hold on the farming of the Giuseppe & Luisa vineyard with the knowledge that one day these grapevines in turn will be 130 + years old with another generation riding the tractor.

Salute, from our family to yours,
 Martinelli Winery Update
Julianna G. Martinelli

Winemaker Notes

2019 Giuseppe and Luisa Zinfandel

Our 2019 Giuseppe & Luisa Zinfandel has a bright nose with comforting aromas of raspberry compote, warm vanilla and white peach. Mouthwatering upon entry, the palate does not disappoint. Lush layers of juicy raspberry, red plum and nectarine fill your mouth while light barrel spice flavors linger in the long, fresh finish.
