2009 Match Vineyards Butterdragon Hill

Cabernet Sauvignon

February 2012

It’s that time again… the time when thoughts turn to love on Valentine’s Day… the time when the largest member of the squirrel family has predicted the end of winter… the time when we honor a couple of our nation’s greatest Presidents with a sale on bed linens. It’s also the time when wineries release new wines.

The Vintage

We’re thrilled to join this marketing fray with the release of our 2009 Match Vineyards Butterdragon Hill Cabernet Sauvignon. 2009 marked a return to normalcy — if any year is normal in farming — after a challenging and low production 2008. Mild temperatures and little rain throughout the spring and early summer had everything looking good and moving at a slow pace. It warmed up in time for veraison and the clusters colored quickly and evenly. Continued mild weather throughout August and September gave the fruit plenty of time to get ripe but late season rains followed by cooler weather caused a more urgent ending to what had been a fairly mellow year. We harvested Butterdragon in two different picks on October 7th and October 21st bringing in over 20 tons of grapes. By comparison, in 2008, harvest was a month earlier and more than 7 tons less.

The Wine

One is immediately struck by the incredibly dark color hinting of the robust flavors to come. Lush fruit aromas jump from the glass. The wine has a full, sweet mouthfeel and flavors of crème de cassis, ripe juicy plums, and dark chocolate are complimented by black licorice and cedar. It’s big, but balanced. The 2009 reminds us immediately of our debut 2002 Butterdragon. Sure to be a crowd pleaser now, give it an hour in the decanter or a few years in the cellar to tame its youthfulness. We bottled 200 cases. (Vintner’s Notes)

District 4 Tasting Lounge * Wine Bar

Being such a small winery, we’ve been unable to greet many of you personally as you’ve visited Napa Valley. That’s changing. District 4, downtown Napa’s newest tasting lounge, is a partnership between Match Vineyards, Fulcrum, TEXTBOOK, and X Winery. At District 4 you can taste any or all of these hard-to-find wines, enjoy a glass, or take home a bottle, Be sure to visit District 4 in Napa at 1405 Second Street. By the way, in case you’re wondering, “District 4” is the state of California’s designation for the grape growing region of Napa County.

This is the 7th vintage from our little Napa Valley jewel. We continue our dedication to crafting a world class wine that tells the tale of a vintage at this special place. Thank you for your continued enthusiasm for Match Vineyards and allowing us, through our wines, to share a spot at your family’s table.
Warmest regards,
The Match Vineyards Family
