Napa Wine Train, www.winetrain.com, In 1987 a group of concerned citizens founded the Napa Valley Wine Train, with the goal of preserving the transportation corridor for future use and reducing traffic congestion in the valley. The Napa Valley Wine Train purchased the rail line from Southern Pacific, restored vintage 1910’s era Pullman rail cars, and hired a team of food service experts to provide visitors with an unmatched luxury rail experience. Over the last 20 years, we at the Napa Valley Wine Train has been improving the right of way, and has made modern improvements to some of our antique equipment

What is the Wine Train

The Napa Valley Wine Train provides a relaxing three hour journey along the thirty six mile round-trip between the historic town of Napa through one of the world’s most famous wine valleys to the quaint village of St. Helena and back.

Guests aboard the Wine Train enjoy the option of a freshly prepared lunch or dinner as they view the vineyards and wineries from any of the vintage 1915-1917 Pullman Dining, Lounge or the 1952 Vista Dome rail cars which have been lavishly restored.

The Route of the Napa Valley Wine Train

The tracks upon which the Napa Valley Wine Train runs were originally built in the 1860’s to bring guests to the hot spring resort town of Calistoga. While the track to Calistoga no longer exists, much of the rest of the route of the Napa Valley Wine Train is unchanged. Due to the immense influence that rail transport had over the development of the communities and wineries of the Napa Valley, there is no shortage of sights to see during the three hour journey to St. Helena. Five towns, Napa, Yountville, Oakville, Rutherford and St. Helena, and numerous wineries can be seen through the large picture windows on board the Wine Train.

The Napa Valley Wine Train begins its journey at the McKinstry Street Station in Napa. The train then travels north to St. Helena, where the locomotive disconnects from the north facing side of the train and reconnects to the south facing side of the train in preparation for the return journey. Depending on the day of the week, the Napa Valley Wine Train makes two stops. On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, guests who have purchased the Domaine Chandon Tour will disembark at Yountville during the southbound leg of the trip. Guests on the Domaine Chandon tour will be transported back to the McKinstry Street station by motor coach upon the conclusion of the tour. On weekdays (Monday through Friday), guests who have purchased the Grgich Hills Tour will disembark at Grgich Hills Winery on the northbound leg of the trip, and be picked up by the Wine Train as the train travels southbound.
