TASTING WINES

Domaine Denis Carré Bourgogne Aligoté 2015

The dynamic sister and brother team of Gaetane and Martial Carré organically farm 14 hectares of vines in Meursault, Auxey Duresses, Pommard and the Haute Côtes. The very rare and ancient variety, Aligoté, becomes something very special in their hands, rich but vibrant, brimming with life and acidity. Pair with rich cuisine.

Domaine Corsin Saint Veran Tirage Precoce 2017
Giles Corsin is one of the great farmers and vignerons of the Maconnais. His 8 hectare of immaculate, naturally tended vines are in the mid-slope of the hillsides vineyards above the villages of Davayé and Fuissé.  The Tirage Precoce is one of two bottlings of Saint Veran at Corsin. This cuveé is vinified completely in stainless steel tanks and bottled early. It is an unadulterated version of Chardonnay, filled with mineral-laced green-apple/Asian pear aromas and flavors. Bracing acidity provides a super long finish and wonderful food-friendliness.

André Bonhomme Viré-Clessé Vieilles Vignes  2017

As a young man, André Bonhomme took a huge risk.  Rather than selling his grapes to the local cooperative, he decided to bottle his chardonnay and sell it on his own.  He was the first proprietor to do so in the region.  Over the years, his resolve and determination paid off, allowing him to acquire perfectly situated hillside vineyards above his native town of Viré.  His grandson, Aurélein, is now at the helm but he hasn’t changed much of anything. He’s smart enough to trust the 80 year old vines that are the source for this classic white Burgundy. On our last visit to the domaine, Aurelien opened up his grandfather’s 1961 Macon Viré, sourced from the exact vines that produce this current wine. The wine had plenty of life, amazing. Drink now-?….500 cases produced.

Beckman Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc Santa Barbara County 2007
This is classic, sunny California Sauvignon Blanc; intense aromas, pure fruitiness and “drinkability” make it a great choice as an aperitif or as a cocktail wine at your next party. Pair with all types of seafood and poultry.
Cape Mentelle Sauvignon/Semillon Blend 2017
Cape Mentelle’s classic Margaret River blend of Sauvignon blanc and Semillon is a stylish, vibrant white wine. The style accentuates the fresh, vibrant fruit characters of both varieties with the added complexity and palate weight offered through a small component of barrel fermentation. It has a terrific nose, mingling briny, saline notes with yellow peach, passion fruit and lemon zest. The fruit in the mid-palate is juicy and perfectly balanced by a fresh acidity that screams for oysters on the half shell or any type of richer seafood. Great party white.
Domaine Cornu-Camus Hautes Côtes de Nuits Rouge 2017
Lydia Cornu naturally farms small parcels in Pernand Vergelesses, Hautes Cotes de Beaune and the Hautes Côtes de Nuits. The Cornu family has grown grapes here for 600 years! That expertise is important as the high elevation and cooler microclimates of these appellations require perfectly positioned vineyards and impeccable farming to produce consistently ripe grapes. The ’17 HCN is a product of old vines and a low yield with no new oak in the ageing process. The wine is a joy to drink, a bowl full of berries on the nose, mineral-laced fruit in the mid palate with the structure and length that is the hallmark of Cornu-Camus wines. Drink now-2021
Domaine Louis Boillot Bourgogne Rouge 2016
Domaine Louis Boillot was established in 2002 when his father’s Gevrey-Chambertin-based estate (Lucien Boillot et Fils) was split between Louis and his brother (Pierre). Louis set-up his cellar in Chambolle-Musigny, where he lives with his wife, famous and highly-respected maker Ghislaine Barthod. Both Ghislaine’s and Louis’ wines are made in the same cellars (underneath their house). Organically farming a total of just over seven hectares, Louis Boillot achieves balance and concentration through low yields. Old vines and mineral soil in Brochon produces Bourgogne Rouge with great aromatic complexity and structure for long life. The 2016 is delicious now, but has the pedrigree to age gracefully in a proper cellar for up to 10 years. A terrific winter Pinot. Pair with duck, salmon and mushroom dishes.
Domaine Paul and Marie Jacqueson Rully Rouge Champonnieres 2017
Marie Jacqueson is producing Burgundy that is nothing short of magical in the backwater of Rully, proving once again to really find value, you have to get off the rue nationale. These lots of red and white Rully from Marie, one of our newer addition to our family of wine-growers, have been incredibly well-received with more requests for reorders than almost any other producer we’ve featured this year. The issue is the quantity. Marie was selling her wine just fine before we met so the amounts we’ve been able to bring over have been minuscule, even on the tiny scale that great Burgundy usually measured. Her Rully Rouge Champonnieres is an old vine cuvee, rooted in soil that is a classic mix of clay and limestone. Such soil provides for intense aromatics of strawberry, black cherry, cinammon and roses. The fruit is almost crunchy; incredibly fresh, juicy, really flat-out delicious. Great now, great in 10 years, qualitatively worth double the price.
Domaine Gasnier Chinon Les Graves 2017
The estate of Domaine Gasnier is comprised of 25 hectares, all within the commune of Cravant-les-Coteaux. The Gasniers employ biodynamic techniques in farming, no pesticides or herbicides. Les Graves is a single vineyard made up of 30 year old Cabernet Franc vines rooted in rocky soil. The wine is bright and fruity redolent of cedar and fresh red berries. The wine is vinified in tank to maintain that pristine fruit. The 2017 is very fine and is wonderful with grilled food, roasted poultry and hard cheeses.
Ettore Germano Barbera d’Alba 2017
The 22 acre organically farmed estate of Sergio Germano is a rising start in the town of Serralunga. Sergio made a terrific Barbera in 2017 with fresh berry fruit with just a touch of spice.  This kind of vibrant, snappy Barbera, makes for one of the more food friendly red wines in the shop perfect for any weekday dinner. Great pizza wine.
Château Roque le Mayne Côtes de Castillon 2016
Jean-Francois Meynard naturally farms 15 hectares of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec vines on the classic argilo-calcaire soil of the Cotes de Castillon. The minerality in the soil perfectly balances the incredible concentration of fruit Meynard coaxes from his vines. The 2016 vintage is marked by an intense purple color, complex aromatics of cassis and sweet herbs and a lengthy finish, one usually reserved for wine twice its price. Roque le Mayne is a steal, delicious today yet with the breed and stuffing to improve in the bottle for up to 10 years. If you can’t resist the killer fruit, pair with grilled lamb chops or any juicy burger.
Corzano e Paterno Chianti Terre di Corzano 2015

Aljoscha Goldschimdt is the owner and winemaker of Corzano e Paterno. This picturesque estate lies in the commune of San Casciano, just outside of Florence.  Joshi is a farmer first; his 14 hectare of pristine vineyards are organically tended and are cropped at a low yield. The ’15 Chianti is intensely aromatic and concentrated with a viscous texture that allows the wine to be delicious upon release. Wonderfully food friendly, pair this Chianti with grilled food, pasta with mushrooms and pecorino cheese.
Brunori Rosso Conero 2016
The old vineyards of Montepulciano that the Brunori family tend are 200 meters above sea level, rising high above the Adriatic. The Apennine Mountains provide shelter for a micro climate perfect for this southern Italian variety.  Low yields and simple vinification result in a wine with deep color, aromatic complexity and terrific concentration, perfect with grilled meats and mushroom dishes.
Fabre Montmayou Cabernet Sauvignon Patagonia

Barrel Selection 2016
The Patagonia Cab from Hervé Fabre is sourced from one of the most extreme environments in the world. Its ancient vines are rooted in sandy desert high above the Rio Negro, where temperatures can swing 45 degrees in either direction, not an easy place to grow grapes. But it is those extremes that bring out the best in Cabernet, those stressed old vines yield black, opulent fruit yet with aromatic complexity and structure that belies its humble price tag. Great choice for a house red. Drink with everything you cook outside, ribs, steaks, burgers.
Carl Roy Proprietary Red Napa Valley East Side Cuvee 2016
2016 in the Napa Valley was a terrific year for Cabernet. A dry, warm spring was followed by a cool, dry summer, allowing for incredibly slow, even development of aromas and flavors, a picture-perfect vintage. Harvest began in mid-October providing grapes with unusual “hang-time”. Selected from vineyards just south of Oakville, the wine is full of rich red and black fruit, punctuated by the fine acid backbone of this extraordinary vintage. The 2016 is a special Cabernet based blend, super-charged with some old vine, low ph Petit Verdot that makes lends a powerful kick in fruit and structure but with a stony freshness that makes it both great at the table and a candidate for short term aging. Great deal!
