The Wines of Catena with Laura Catena
Wednesday March 30, 7:00pm-9:00pm
Join us for a very special finale to our month-long Divinale women & wine festival. We’re honored to host Laura Catena of Bodegas Catena Zapata.
Redefining the term ‘Renaissance Woman,’ Laura Catena is a winemaker, emergency room physician, medical educator, mother of three, and now an author with the recent publication of Vino Argentino.  Laura will lead us in a tasting of eight Catena wines, including four of their ultra-premium, high-altitude cuvees from the 2007 vintage which were all rated 95-98 points by The Wine Advocate.  Chef Andres Barrera will prepare Argentinian dishes based on recipes in Laura’s book, and several lucky guests will take home signed copies of Vino Argentino.
Bodegas Catena Zapata — Laura’s father, Nicolas Catena, is credited with revolutionizing Argentina’s wine industry and producing the first world-class Argentine wines. In 2001, Laura took over the Research & Development program at Bodega Catena Zapata. A physician with degrees from Harvard and Stanford, Laura brought a very strong science background to the family winery’s R&D project. She immediately set about working with the high altitude Malbec that her father had planted. Laura was sure that this Argentine varietal, planted in these extreme microclimates, would yield something truly special.
Laura’s determination to produce world-class Malbec led her and the viticultural team to conduct an actual plant-by-plant selection of the top Malbec lots in their high altitude vineyards. The program produced such extraordinary fruit that the winemaking team decided to ferment the fruit directly in new oak barrels. The result was three spectacular new Malbecs which showed the incredible quality of the family’s high altitude vineyards. We are fortunate to taste the current vintages of these three premium Malbecs, as well as the rare NCZ Cabernet-Malbec blend that combines the best selections from Catena’s top vineyards.:
