93-Point Dr. Crane Vineyard Cabernet

In Napa Valley like most places in the wine world, the older the vineyard the better. But for a country that hasn’t been cultivating the vine for very long, there are precious few American vineyards with any real age to them.
Even Napa Valley is no exception, only a select few, cherished spots are older than 40 years or so — usually with incredible price tags attached to the wines that bear their name. In the tiny and beloved subregion of St. Helena, nothing gets any older or more well-respected than Beckstoffer’s Dr. Crane’s vineyard.
Dr. George Belden Crane was among the first visionaries to plant vines in the U.S. back in 1862. He made the sobering discovery that he would later document in his medical journal that there was far more money to be made in wine grapes than in medicine. If only he could have been around to see what his grapes fetch today!

Eventually, Ed Salvestrin’s family would go on to buy the Crane property in 1932. He and his wife, Suzanne would sell the fruit to the high-flying big name players in wine, such as the Beckstoffers (who purchased the vineyard in 1999), Paul Hobbs, Alpha Omega and Realm just to name a few. By the late 90’s prices had already began to swell into the $200-$300 range, with Dr. Crane Vineyard fruit commanding far more per ton than almost any other vineyard in the valley.
But like many of origins of the best wines in the worlds, the Salvestrins finally decided to make their own Dr. Crane Vineyard Cabernet and bottle it under the family name. Ever since their inaugural vintage in 2001, they have become managed to stay a bit under the radar while consistently garnering big scores from arguably the world’s two toughest critics in Wine Spectator and Parker’s Wine Advocate.
While reviewing the 2010s, Robert Parker, Jr. himself declared, “These wines never seem to get old, and this will be one our grandchildren can enjoy circa 2050.” He punctuated that review with a 95 point score.
The core of 2018 Salvestrin Napa Valley Cabernet (a little over 60%) comes direct from the Dr. Crane vineyard and its unmistakable traits are on full display. It’s a beautiful, very concentrated and full-bodied Cabernet, bursting with flavors of blueberry, raspberry and blackberries. It has the textbook Crane Vyd opulence and richness that is backed by a solid tannin backbone, making it an especially age-worthy Cabernet and easily worth the three digit price tag it should command.
Armed with a rave 93-point review from the Wine Spectator, I’m delighted to have secured 10 cases to offer up today. While a steal at the winery’s release price of $60/bottle, I’m able to go out with very special pricing today.
$40 per bottle– a straight steal for this quality of wine, down to just $36/btl on case orders. Considering the superb vintage, the wine’s score and the Dr. Crane vineyard fruit here, I can’t imagine those 10 cases will be around long. Don’t mess around!

Argiolas Is Argiolas Vermentino di Sardegna 2020
This is the top winery in Sardinia, and many have copied their proven methods including picking their Vermentino late into the fall to maximize the fruit’s ripeness and balance it with the region’s natural acidity. But no one can replicate the ancient vineyards. The wines are full-bodied, intricate and long with a depth and a sophistication that few thought Vermentino could produce.
