TASTING WINES

Chateau des Fromenteaux Muscadet de Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie Vieilles Vignes 2015
Pierre Luneau-Papin is a highly esteemed farmer and winemaker producing some of the best wines in the entire Pays Nantais, at the extreme west of the Loire Valley. A believer in organic agriculture and hand-harvesting, the soil is mainly micaschist and gneiss, some plots are a mix of silica, volcanic rocks and schist. The estate has a high proportion of old vines, 40 years old on average, up to 65 years of age. This cuvée of Muscadet shows a characteristic blend of citrus fruit and mineral flavors, with fresh acidity and rich texture due to long contact with the lees. Drink with anything from the sea or grilled sausages.

Giovanni Almondo Arneis Bricco delle Ciligie 2016
For 300 years, the Almondo family has tended vines of Arneis, the noble white variety of Piedmont. Their six hectares are at elevation, averaging 350 meters. The old vines of the single vineyard, Bricco delle Ciligie, are rooted in sand that covers an old ocean bed. The wine dazzles right out of the bottle, with great aromas of white flowers, almonds and a touch of sage.  The mid-palate has layers of concentrated peach and citrus fruit with a mineral streak and a long finish.

Chäteau Viella Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh Sec 2015
Tucked into the backwaters of southwest France lies the appellation of Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh. Home to some of the most celebrated (and rich) cuisine of France in the form of duck confit, foie gras and cassoulet, the wines cut through fat and spice like few others. The dry white, an aromatic, vibrant wine, is made from the  indigenous grape varieties Arrufiac, Petit Manseng and Gros Manseng which thrive on gravelly hillsides of appellation. Pair with anything rich, lobster, crab, cream sauces, roasted duck, spicy sausages or foie gras.

Domaine Ricard Touraine Sauvignon Blanc Les Trois Chenes 2015
Vincent Ricard organically farms seventeen hectares in the Touraine, just 3 hours west of Paris. The Trois Chenes cuvee comes from a parcel of Sauvignon Blanc planted in 1950 on a south-facing slope of sandy clay-limestone. The wine has a great nose, showing terrific aromas of green apple, jasmine and bitter honey. The flavors are ripe and complex, featuring spiced pear and quince, followed by a stony, fresh finish. Great white wine for the deck or patio this spring and summer!

André Bonhomme Viré-Clessé 2015
As a young man, André Bonhomme took a huge risk.  Rather than selling his grapes to the local cooperative, he decided to bottle his chardonnay and sell it on his own.  He was the first proprietor to do so in the region.  Over the years, his resolve and determination paid off, allowing him to acquire perfectly situated hillside vineyards above his native town of Viré.  His grandson, Aurélein, is now at the helm but he hasn’t changed much of anything. He’s smart enough to trust the old vines that are the source for this classic white Burgundy.

Domaine Terres de Velle Monthélie Blanc Les Sous Roches 2015

The husband and wife team of Terre des Velles craft mineral, taut Chardonnays from the mineral soil of Monthélie. Les Sous Roches produces wines that are aromatically complex, deeply concentrated and very, very long. The ’15 features an expressive nose of chalk, peach and white nuts. The wine is concentrated and full-bodied yet has the vibrancy to ensure it ages gracefully in a proper cellar for at least 10 years. Very, very fine white Burgundy, drink now-2030. 100 cases produced.

Mer Soleil Chardonnay 2014

This classic Cali Chard, rich and buttery, is sourced from vineyards planted in 1988 that get an abundance of sunshine yet are moderated by constant breezes from its close proximity to the Pacific Ocean. The ’14 has a terrific balance of creaminess and acidity. It’s great wine to have on its own but will always be delicious with lobster and summer corn.

Domaine de la Citadelle Côtes du Luberon Rosé Le Châtaignier 2016
Situated on the northern slopes of the Luberon mountains, 35km east of Avignon and the confluence of the Rhône and the Durance rivers, Domaine de le Citadelle has 40 hectares of vines; divided into approximately 65 different parcels. The vineyard is planted with a total of 14 different grape varieties, each farmed organically. The wines of the domaine are generous and full-bodied, with complex aromas and great length. Le Châtaignier is terrific, dry Rosé, fresh and fruity, perfect with anything you would cook on the deck this summer.

Stolpman Vineyards Carbonic Sangiovese Love You Bunches 2016

In pursuit of a light-bodied red wine that would be ready to drink fresh and young, Pete Stolpman began experimenting with carb0nic fermentation in 2013. Whole bunches of grapes placed in small tanks, left to ferment without breaking the skins of the grapes. By leaving fruit whole, much less skin tannin and color is extracted. Enjoy Love You Bunches straight out of the fridge just like a rosé or white wine with pizza, burgers or anything simple off the grill. Be warned…this is wine that drinks fast…..if at a party, have at least 5 bottles as a backup…you’ll quickly see that it’s the ultimate party red…

Ettore Germano Dolcetto d’Alba Lorenzino  2015

The 22 acre estate of Ettore Germano, in the town of Serralunga, is one of the leading artisanal estates in Barolo. Ettore’s son, Sergio, tends his vines of Dolcetto organically. Pristine farming allows for deeply-colored, intensely scented Dolcetto, with ripe and fruity flavors. This wine’s rich texture and soft tannins make it perfect for drinking immediately with pizza, grilled meats, antipasto, roasted chicken, and hard cheeses. Great house red.
Domaine Francois Raquillet Mercurey Rouge 1er cru Les Vasées 2015
Tucked into the limestone-laden, green hills of Mercurey, lies the 12 hectare estate of François Raquillet. Just south of Chassagne Montrachet, Mercurey in the hands of François becomes Burgundy with a much deeper level of complexity, concentration and age-worthiness than most of his peers. The combination of old vines, low yields and organic farming creates incredible aromatic complexity and a lush texture generally found only in wines with much greater price tags. The Les Vasées 2015 is the product of 60 year old Pinot Noir  vines, rooted in a mineral limestone hillside. Vinified entirely in oak, this is intensely aromatic, concentrated red Burgundy with a stony long finish that makes it absolutely perfect at any table. Great with grilled salmon. Drink now-2025
Giovanni Almondo Barbera d’Alba Valbianchera 2014
The Almondo Barbera d’Alba is an opulent wine, aromatically dynamic and long on the palate. The wine’s origin is an old-vine parcel of Barbera set in the white, mineral soil that Almondo’s estate is known for. Completely vinified in oak barrels, the wine is round and supple Barbera, perfect with grilled foods or holiday roasts. Drink now-2024.
Roc des Anges Côtes de Catalan Mourvèdre Astérolide 2015
When she was just 21 years old, Marjorie Gallet purchased the many old-vine parcels that make up the Roc des Anges estate. She chose a crazy place to make wine, the northern reaches of the Roussillon, in the shadow of the Pyrenees. Incredibly hot, with no rain, no dirt, this part of the Roussillon is just the rugged slate hillsides and wind all day long. But from that mineral rock, Marjorie knew she could coax incredibly vibrant wines, aromatically complex and loaded with fresh fruit. Her first release of the single grape variety, Mourvèdre, has a dark, purple color with a killer nose, with aromas of mint, violets, black berries and dark chocolate. The wine is chewy and rich, with a deep core of fruit and elegant fine tannins. Pair with the cuisine of spring, roasted lamb, pork and ham.
Neyers Left Bank Red 2014
Here is an attractive, traditional Bordeaux-style wine from the Napa Valley, produced entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grown on sustainably-farmed vineyards in Conn Valley. Most of the vines are 25 years-old, and are planted in soil that combines basalt, gravel and clay. Yields were barely two tons per acre so the finished wine is lush and deeply aromatic, with traces of cassis, raspberry and cedar. Pair with grilled steaks or burgers
Duckhorn Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013
An American classic, Duckhorn Napa Valley 2013 Cabernet is an incredibly compelling wine. It offers aromas of blackberry, fig, pipe tobacco and sandalwood in the nose. On the palate, a wonderful, layered structure that is one of the hallmarks of the exceptional 2013 vintage, underscores flavors of violet, red currant, cocoa nibs and graphite. The finish is long and focused. Drink now-2025 with any cut of roasted or grilled beef.
Caymus Voyage 2 Mendoza Malbec
A "Caymus style" of Mendoza Malbec, made from the 2011 vintage from grapes picked in Argentina, shipped to CA (though they can’t put a vintage on the label) and then crushed, fermented and barrel aged at Caymus Vineyards right in the center of the Napa Valley. The wine just blasts out of the glass with a wealth of dark plum and cherry, layered with hints of dark chocolate. On the palate, it’s classic full throttle Caymus (even though they can’t say so on the label) concentrated, velvety, with generous flavors of black fruit and French oak. Pair with grilled beef or ribs.
Weingut Ratzenberger Riesling Spatlese Bacharacher Wolfscholle 2004
This is fruity Rhein Riesling of sumptuous fruit flavors (tangerine, peaches, ruby red grapefruit), stern acidity, and the classic mineral flavors imparted by the steep slopes of the Wolfscholle vineyard. The vineyard, its soil comprised entirely of black Devon slate, has an incredible capacity to produce powerful, mineral-laden and long-lived Riesling.  Aged, rich German Riesling allows for amazing aromatic complexity. Pair with roasted turkey, sausages and salmon. Drink now-2025!
