TASTING WINES

Bele Casel – NV
Prosecco is the classic apertivo of Italy. Its fruity aromas, bright acidity and effervescence make this style of wine a perfect way to start an evening, make a toast or to accompany lighter appetizers. Prosecco is a grape variety indigenous to the Veneto region of Northeast Italy, and the Asolo subzone is one of the finest sites for Italy’s most famous sparkling wine. Bele Casel is a small, organic, artisanal winery who strives to make aromatic and concentrated Prosecco. It’s a great way to start any party.

Diego Bolognani – Pinot Grigio 2016
Diego Bolgnani produces some of the most delicious Pinot Grigios in Italy. It’s handcrafted and Nicholas Wines has it picked up, shipped, stored and delivered at 56 degrees so it tastes in Middletown, NJ, exactly how it tastes in Trento overlooking the Dolomite Mountains. It’s been a staple on our list since the day we opened the door. It’s everything you want in Pinot Grigio…. aromatic, crisp and clean.
Etienne Daulny – Sancerre 2016
Etienne Daulny is the latest in a very long line of Daulnys to farm Sauvignon Blanc near the tiny hamlet of Verdigny in the appellation of Sancerre. His estate is broken up into 50-some parcels, each with a classic soil type found in the very best Sancerre vineyards. Etienne ferments and ages the wine in stainless steel as to protect the pure fruit of his Sauvignon Blanc grapes. The resulting wine is classic Sancerre, aromatically dynamic, with intense fruit, distinct minerality and blazing acidity. Sancerre is incredibly food-friendly, it’s probably the white wine we drink most often at home.

Cape Mentelle Margaret River Sauvignon Blanc 2016
TThe fruit comes from the perfectly suited cooler southern half of the Margaret River region. Three different vineyards go in to the blend, Wallcliffe-Trinders, Crossroads & Chapman Brook. The wine is juicy clean, slightly saline with notes of passionfruit & citrus.

Stags Leap Napa Valley Chardonnay 2015

Aromas of bright lemon citrus, fresh green apple with hints of subtle elderflower fill the glass . On the palate, you’ll find a classic refreshing Chardonnay with a vibrancy of citrus that transitions into lemon curd while also maintaining a roundness in texture that is balanced . With a nutty hazelnut undertone and spicy white pepper, exotic floral finish, this wine is focused, yet generous in style and maintains freshness due to its acidity which creates a Chardonnay of lovely complexity and depth.

Bruno Colin – Chassagne Montrachet 1er cru Morgeot 2014
Pale yellow. Deeply pitched aromas of pear, pineapple, lichee, menthol and exotic flowers, plus a hint of orange zest. Round and broad in the mouth, showing a silkier texture to buffer its acidity than some of the foregoing wines here. Flavors of ripe lemon candy and flowers offer considerable appeal already. The tactile, rising finish shows the energy of white soil.” 90-92 Stephen Tanzer, Vinous Media
Benoni Pinot Noir – San Luis Obispo 2016
The 2016 vintage was superb in San Luis Obispo, one of California’ emerging sources for world-class Pinot Noir. The Benoni vineyards produce tiny berries, packed with flavor, their thick skins allowing for firm structure. The 2016 Petit Grains  offers the perfect combo of dark red fruit and elegant structure that is generally reserved for Pinot twice the price. Benoni Pinot has a great nose with restrained aromas of rose petals and earth. The flavors are deep and rich yet the wine is very fresh as the finish is long and stony. Just a dynamite bottle of American Pinot, priced to drink every day.

Longoria – Lovely Rita Pinot Noir 2015

Super-fine, with a juiced-up, absolutely delicious mid-palate and a mile long, mineral finish, this is a wine to drink with fine cuisine. Primarily sourced from the American Grand Cru vineyard Fe Ciega, on the western edge of the Santa Rita Hills, Lovely Rita is a product of one of the most curious places in California. More like the Scottish Highlands than most people’s vision of southern California, a daily summer fog called the Sea Smoke puts the brakes on the ripening of grapes here, allowing for the slow development of aromatic complexity and purity of fruit that wines like the aptly named Sea Smoke became famous for…Naturally low yields, mineral soil and a tiny production all adds up to produce incredible Pinot, for my money, the very best place in California for Pinot Noir.

Poggio al Sole – Chianti Classico 2014

Poggio Al Sole sits on a dozen hillside hectares at the heart of Chianti Classico. Organic farming and low yields create wines with incredible power; dark, brooding colors, intense extraction of fruit and ripe tannins. The Chianti Classico is 100% Sangiovese, vinified in big barrels. The fruit here is clean and pure, almost like Burgundy but with more earthy backbone. The wine is packed with spiced red cherry and wild berry flavors. This is aromatically dynamic Chianti Classico, an almost perfect food wine, as great with pizza as it would be with a holiday roast of beef, don’t miss it.

Fabre Montmayou Cabernet Sauvignon – Patagonia Barrel Selection 2015
The Patagonia Cab from Hervé Fabre is sourced from one of the most extreme environments in the world. Its ancient vines are rooted in sandy desert high above the Rio Negro, where temperatures can swing 45 degrees in either direction, not an easy place to grow grapes. But it is those extremes that bring out the best in Cabernet, those stressed old vines yield black, opulent fruit yet with aromatic complexity and structure that belies its humble price tag. Great choice for a house red. Drink with everything you cook outside, ribs, steaks, burgers.

Domaine Magellan – AOP Languedoc Rouge 2014

The younger son of Rene Lafon, of Domaine Comte-Lafon in Meursault, Bruno and his family was renown for making spectacular white Burgundy that filled the lists of fine restaurants all over the world. The wine is just packed with fruit with a hint of spice yet finishes fresh and long. A perfect house-red for the autumn and winter and an easy wine to pair with Thanksgiving Dinner if you can plan out that far…….

Beckmen – Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Crafted from the finest blocks of Cabernet grown at the Beckmen Estate Vineyard, this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is fantastic. Aromas and flavors of high toned fruit, violets, vanilla, and nutmeg explode from the glass. A big texture and great structure keep the wine well balanced and smooth across the palate, with ripe tannins that carry the flavor on and on, through a long finish that lasts for over a minute.

Frog’s Leap – Rutherford Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

The wine is rich, with deep mocha aromas, superbly balanced, and features a mile-long finish. Powerful yet elegant with just fantastic fruit, this wine will be delicious this Saturday night or any others over the next 10-15 years as like all great wines from Rutherford, it has the bones to improve in any proper cellar.

Feudo Montoni – Nero d’Avola Special Selection Vrucara Sicily 2012

Fabio Sireci’s top cuvee of organic Nero D’Avola, an ancient variety indigenous to Sicily, comes from the heart of the island, on its mountainous spine between 500 and 700 meters in elevation. The elevation is crucial to escape the south Mediterranean heat with cool nights allowing for a long ripening season.  As big as it is, the wine is fresh and terrific with a killer rack of ribs.

La Rasina – Brunello di Montalcino 2010

This 2010 Sangiovese stunner is earthy and complex with a wonderful appeal of cherry. Medium bodied and very dark in color, it has a rounded palate with tannins on the finish- open a bottle and serve with venison beef and cured cheeses.

Terrazas de los Andes Mendoza Riserva 2016

Bright red color with purple shades. Intense floral and fruity notes. Presence of violets, ripe black cherry and plum aromas. Reveals a toasty and spicy character of black pepper and chocolate. Its sweet and juicy mouthfeel delivers finesse, delicate tannins and an elegant finish of black fruits.
