Tasting Wines

Château Le Grand Verdus Bordeaux Blanc 2018
Château Le Grand Verdus is an incredible estate, founded sometime around the Renaissance and with the current stewards, the Le Grix de la Salle family, growing grapes here since 1810. The vines are old, the farming completely natural and the winemaking is straight-forward. This a classic white Bordeaux, aromatically complex, with a steely structure, built for all types of cuisine.
Quinta de Couselo Rias Baixas Rosal 2018
The Rosal Valley is unique to the Rias Baixas D.O. It’s the most coastal and the coolest of the 5 subzones that Albariño thrives in. Sitting on the Miño river which separates Spain and Portugal, Couselo’s soils contain slate which is extremely rare for the sub-zone. Acidic, well-drained soils that retain heat — great for Albariño, lend wet-stone, saline and lemon aromatics to this electric rendition of Albariño. Pair with Barnegat sea scallops, grilled shrimp, any flaky white fish or just by itself as the perfect aperitif.
Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2019
Since 1985, the iconic New Zealand estate, Cloudy Bay, has taken no shortcuts in the pursuit of excellence. The 2019 rendition is fine and elegant, with a crisp and clean mouthfeel and finish; drink this with everything. The price is crazy, one of the best in the country. We are likely not to see another price like this on any iconic white all year, load up!
Juliana Layla Chardonnay San Luis Obispo 2018
This wine is just loaded with crisp green apple and pear fruit, kissed with just a touch of new wood. Rich fruit is balanced by a firm, mineral acidity that leaves a lingering finish and speaks entirely to its cool climate San Luis Obispo vineyard site.
Domaine Barmes-Buecher Sept Grains 2018
This wildly expressive, flashy white wine from Maxime and Sophie Barmes contains the free run juice from every single vineyard and variety that the Barmes’ produce. A blend of seven different grapes and six different vineayrds, including the Grand Crus, Hengst and Steingrubler, the Sept Grains is a true taste of the Barmes estate! Wonderfully aromatic and intensely flavored, this is a dry wine with the spice of Gewurz, the mineral refinement of Riesling, the lushness of Pinot Gris, and the crispness of Pinot Blanc! Drink with anything but it is particularly good with richer seafood and grilled sausages.
Poggio al Sole Trittico 2017
Poggio al Sole lies in the commune of Tavernelle Val di Pesa, in the heart of Chianti Classico. Organic farming and low yields create wines with incredible power; dark, brooding colors, intense extraction of fruit and ripe tannins. The Trittico is a blend of young vine Sangiovese and Cabernet, vinified in stainless steel tanks. It displays a bright, ruby red color and aromas of black raspberry and cherry with a touch of earth. Great fruit and good acidity make it incredibly food friendly, pair with roasted meats, pastas with mushrooms or pizza.
Juliana Layla Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2018
This is a dynamic Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, aromatically explosive, with a bowl full of berries on the mouth with just the right amount of spice. The finish is long, the tannins, really fine. It’s an easy choice for a "house" pinot as it will be at both restaurant and my house for as long as we have it.
Newton Skyside Cabernet Sauvignon 2017
Winemaker Anne Dempsey looks to craft high quality (yet affordable!) wine by using the same sourcing method as I do in Burgundy…she gets off the beaten path. Crafted from sustainable, old vine vineyards across northern California, with Mendocino, Lake and Solano counties making up the bulk of sourcing. The wine is fruity and fresh, showing off aromas and flavors of violets, blueberry and plum fruits, with firm tannins making the wine great at the table. Sealing the deal on what could be the Super-bowl sized deal of the year, we’ve got the best price in the country.
Château Brulesecaille Côtes de Bourg 2016
2016 Château Brulesecaille is comprised of about equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. In the glass, the wine is dark purple color, jet-black to its core. The nose is great, a classic blend of cassis, black cherry, cedar and sweet tobacco. The 2016 is a classic, one The Wine Spectator calls, "…a potentially classic vintage, marked by tannic, yet racy, fresh and defined reds." The fruit is dark and juicy, which unravels in the glass, give it lots of time. It’s a structured, powerful Bordeaux, framed by ripe, fine tannins that makes it both fantastic with roasts of beef, lamb and game and also a candidate for long aging. Drink now-2030.
Para Maria de los Tecolotes Syrah Santa Barbara County 2017
"Medium to deep ruby-purple, the 2017 Para Maria de las Tecolotes has an inviting nose of crushed blueberries, red cherries, wild blackberries and red berry preserves with violet, charcuterie, spice and potpourri nuances. The medium-bodied palate is energetic and offers perfumed, tricolored fruits, with a frame of gently chewy tannins and juicy freshness, finishing long with lots of perfume. This will be a crowd-pleaser with its easy, Côtes-du-Rhone style. " 91 Points Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Elio Grasso Barbera d’Alba 2016
"The Barbera grape can often act like Nebbiolo showing its best results in the later vintages that end on a cool note. Those conditions are what define the beautiful 2016 Barbera d’Alba Vigna Martina. The wine sees 20 days of maceration with submerged cap, and the bouquet is flowing, polished and impactful as a result. Blackberry, summer cherry and plum rise from the glass. Some 18 months of oak aging adds delicate touches of spice, leather and cedar." 93 points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Xavier Gigondas 2015
"Dark red. Expansive, spice-accented black and blue fruit, Indian spice and licorice aromas, lifted by a peppery nuance. Smooth and alluringly sweet, offering sappy black raspberry and floral pastille flavors that gain energy as the wine opens up. In a plush, opulent style; a refreshing jolt of minerality adds cut to the long, gently tannic finish."….91 Points Antonio Galloni’s Vinous Media
Three Petit Sirah Old Vines Contra Costa 2016
Dedicated to bringing historical California vineyards and varietals to the forefront of winemaking, Three Wine Company specializes in handcrafted vintages of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Rhone blends. Winemaker, Matt Cline yields to his California heritage, pulling from multiple varietals and appellations in his quest for the perfect wine. The 2016 Petit Sirah has a jet-black color with aromas of blueberry jam, thyme and white pepper. Packed with concentration, sweet fruit coats the palate. The finish is a mile long with the perfect hint of spice. Pair with burgers or BBQ but best with cheese steaks!
Roberto Ferraris Barbera d’Asti 2018
From the turret of Roberto Ferraris’ cantina one can see an endless panorama of vineyards situated on the nearby sloping hills. His Barbera vineyards are the steepest of all, wonderfully exposed to the morning sun. Vinified in stainless steel vats under controlled temperature, this wine retains its pristine fruit aromas and primary flavors that make it wonderfully food-friendly. Pair with burgers, pizza and hard cheeses.
Ettore Germano Langhe Nebbiolo 2018
The 22 acre estate of Ettore Germano, in the town of Serralunga, is one of the leading artisanal estates in Barolo. Ettore’s son Sergio now organically farms his vines with the all the work being done by hand. Sergio’s wines enjoy an incredible vibrancy. His Langhe Nebbiolo is bright, aromatic wine, from young vines in the Barolo vineyard, Cerretta. It’s done simply, in tank, to accentuate the intense floral aromatics and deep, red fruitiness of the young Nebbiolo. Pair this wine with veal, pork and mushroom risotto.
