Updates from Tanner & Greg
Spring 2019 Winery & Vineyard Notes
Dear Red Car Family,
We hope this note finds you well from the West Sonoma Coast! After a wet and rainy winter, we are excited to welcome the spring and summer months ahead; we are buzzing with excitement around the winery.
First off, we shipped our new release wines to our club members this week and can’t wait to celebrate with our club members this Saturday from 4:00-6:00 PM. We’ll have the new wines (2015 Hagan Pinot Noir, 2016 Heaven & Earth Pinot Noir, and 2015 Vivio Roussanne) paired with special bites from Pascaline Patisserie and Cafe. Be sure to RSVP to the Spring Release Party, if you haven’t already!
In the cellar, Tanner and Kenny are busy assembling the beginnings of our 2018 blends – this includes Chardonnay & Syrah, but is mostly specific to Pinot Noir. The Chardonnays are really showing a lot of promise this year; crazy natural acid, beautiful aromatics and awesome depth in flavor. Most lots are finishing their natural fermentation, given that spring is finally here!
We’ll be doing a lot of racking, all with gas and gravity, over the next 6 weeks. We feel that the 2018 vintage is special, and are collectively really excited about all of our wines.
Tanner recently completed his order of new barrels for the 2019 vintage. As usual, we’ll be using very little new wood for our new vintage, however new wood is a very important tool in almost every wine we make. Tanner works closely with three coopers who help him choose the perfect fits for our wines; Different forests, length of stave seasoning, and toasting profiles are just some of the variables to be considered!
As Tanner wraps up his travels from Atlanta, Kansas City, Boston and New York – he is excited to spend more time in the vineyards as the rain has finally subsided and vineyard growth is taking off!
From the vineyards, Greg is very optimistic that we are on target for another exceptional year. As the soil begins to warm up, soil biological activity will increase. This extra *boost* of early season nutrients helps to produce a healthy, non-stressed grapevine canopy — capable of supporting abundant yields like 2018. Currently, we are busy shoot thinning and positioning in the vineyards. It’s a time full of energy.
We look forward to hosting you this spring and summer and highly recommend our Vineyard Tour & Tasting experience at Zephyr Farms Vineyard. Please contact Direct Sales Manager, Brady Moran for reservations.
