Growing Season Notes from the West Sonoma Coast

Hi All,
We hope this email finds you well and you are gradually preparing for the holiday season. It’s hard to believe that Thanksgiving is one week from today!
As harvest came to an official close on October 27, we have had some time to reflect on the 2018 growing season. Greg Adams, our Vineyard Manager shares his thoughts below.

Late spring through summer was characterized by below average temperatures throughout, which delayed ripening 2 to 3 weeks as compared to previous years. The season peaked with a few warm days toward the end of veraison which helped balance our cluster maturity.
We kicked off the 2018 vintage with the Calera clone of Pinot Noir from Heaven & Earth on September 9 and just like that, we were scheduling harvests one after another. To ensure that grapes arrived at the winery in perfect condition, we logged more consecutive night harvests this year than any other in our winery’s history.
Although we have had plenty of opportunity to rest since we brought in our last fruit, I am reminded of our many long nights harvesting as I write this.
Today in the vineyards, winter rains are still off in the distance. We now carefully prepare our vines for winter dormancy by planting cover crops that will help build the soil, prevent soil erosion and supply the grapevines for healthy rejuvenation in the spring.
