A long time ago, at a University far, far away, a UC Davis professor began a series of trials to find Cabernet Sauvignon Clones best suited to Beaulieu Vineyard’s Rutherford Bench terroir.
These two clones, to be joined later by Clone 169, became mainstays of our vineyards in Rutherford and are key components of our exquisite Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon.
Enjoy 20% off our single-clone Cabernet Sauvignons with shipping included on 4 or more bottles. Let the force be with your cellar when you shop! They will age beautifully and are highly drinkable now thanks to the unique makeup of the clones.  Read on to learn how these clones voyaged through the galaxy to become part of wine history.

    Clone 4
Also known as the Mendoza clone, it was first identified and isolated in Argentina. It arrived at UC Davis in 1964 and was later selected to be grafted to rootstocks in the well-draining, alluvial fan soils of our Estate vineyards.
Clone 4 is known for its larger berries and tighter clusters, which give Cabernets and blends lush, full flavors and softer more approachable tannins.
    Clone 6
This clone began its life in a vineyard far, far away at a research station in the Sierra Foothills that was abandoned in 1903. The original vines were left to survive in the mountain terrain until 1963, when a UC Davis professor rescued them and brought them back to the university to be studied.
Often referred to as our mountain fruit on the valley floor, Clone 6 has small berries and small loose clusters that yield highly concentrated flavors structured by muscular tannins.
    Clone 169
The Cabernet 169 clone is a French, Bordeaux clone that first came to the US and was planted by UC Davis in 2003. It is best known for its outstanding aging potential and and has been gaining popularity in all the major Cabernet growing regions. As a component of our Georges de Latour and other reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Clone 169 has good berry size, high vigor, and a well-balanced acid to sugar ratio.
Beaulieu Vineyard’s Clone 169 Cabernet Sauvignon is a big, bold wine with intense complexity. The clone’s loose clusters and small berries produce a wine with concentrated dark fruit flavors, round tannins and a smooth, yet powerful finish.
