The Sauv Blanc lovers among you must be overjoyed with our current bounty of offerings: Lot 780 from Marlborough showcases the definitive New Zealand racy and vibrant character, Lot 815 from Russian River Valley bridges the racy palate elements with a softer-toned profile and is a terrific crowd pleaser, and Lot 810 from Dry Creek Valley reveals how incredibly delineated and aromatic a California expression can be without fully entering the “high acid, high minerality” zone that New Zealand is famous for. Today, a Napa Valley release completes this cornucopia of riches as a graceful American counterpart to White Bordeaux (sans Semillon, of course).
Lot 822 Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc comes to us from a Rutherford estate surrounded in every direction by some of the most legendary names in the valley (and is quite decorated in its own right). Helmed by a winemaker with almost 40 years crafting Napa Valley Bordelaise varietals under their belt, the focus here is on making a small handful of wines each year extremely well, and the top-class quality is clearly evident – the fact that white florals and beeswax notes are found in abundance without any Semillon blending at all is a testament to the skill on display, and reveals how much of this grape’s character can be discovered using great fruit from great vines without any blending as long as you have the right soil and the right hands.

Lot 822 opens with an elegant nose of jasmine, pear, melon, and apple blossoms. The entry is all beeswax and grapefruit opening over soft acidity, carried by great palate weight and a touch of spice before transitioning into a clean finish of additional blossoms and delicate minerality that demands another sip. Delicious.
