Catena – Argentina’s ‘First Family’ with Pablo Piccolo of Bodega Catena Zapata

Catena wines, first launched in 1992, set a new standard for quality in South America. The wines immediately proved the quality potential of Argentina and garnered the first outstanding reviews for Argentine wines from worldwide media.

Join us for a very special kick-off dinner to the 4th annual International Pairing Series with a dinner showcasing seven wines from Bodega Catena Zapata, led by Catena’s own Pablo Piccolo.

Our line-up includes wines with stratospheric ratings from The Wine Advocate, including the single-vineyard Nicasia Malbec 2008 (95 points) and the flagship Nicolas Catena Zapata 2008 (98 points), a Cabernet-Malbec blend named after the winery’s iconic founder.

About the Winery: In 1902, Nicola Catena, an Italian immigrant, planted his first vineyard in Mendoza, Argentina. The winery has remained under family control — now in its third generation — and is one of the few family-owned wine companies in Argentina that remains in Argentine hands. Owned today by Nicolás Catena and his daughter Laura, Bodega Catena Zapata is known as the pioneer of fine wine from Argentina, and Nicolás is recognized as the vintner who revolutionized wine quality in Argentina. A trained economist, Nicolás began this revolution in the early 1980s and continues to challenge himself and his team to make wines that can be counted among the best in the world. His measured approach to viticulture has taken its place in wine history as the pioneer of Malbec and high-altitude viticulture, and it culminated in his being named Decanter Magazine’s Man of the Year in 2009.

About the presenter: Pablo Piccolo is a native of Argentina’s signature wine region, Mendoza. A third generation vintner and winemaker, Pablo was introduced to wine by his grandfather, an Italian immigrant to Argentina. His grandfather purchased the family winery in the 1950s, and it remains in the family today. Pablo has worked in the wine industry as export manager and as a winemaker. His first vintage as a winemaker was in 2006, working with Mendoza’s signature varietal, Malbec. Pablo Piccolo has been with Bodega Catena Zapata since 2011.

Catena Malbec Nicasia Vineyard 2008

95 pts Wine Advocate: The Catena Zapata icons begin with the 2008 Nicasia Vineyard Malbec, which spent 18 months in 100% new French barriques. A glass-coating opaque purple/black, it offers up a super-fragrant nose of toasty new oak, earth notes, exotic spices, black cherry and black raspberry. This is followed by a plush, layered, intensely flavored, rich wine with potential complexity, precision, balance, and a seamless finish.

Catena ‘Nicolas Catena Zapata’ 2008

98 pts Wine Advocate: The 2008 Nicolas Catena Zapata is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Malbec, and the balance Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc that spent 24 months in 100% new French oak followed by 24 months in bottle prior to release. It delivers an inviting bouquet of wood smoke, pencil lead, espresso, incense, lavender, black currant, and black cherry. This sets the stage for a full-bodied, powerful yet elegant, beautifully proportioned effort with great depth and volume. It conceals plenty of structure and will effortlessly evolve for 6-8 years, drinking well through 2028, if not longer.
