     Pax Mahle Wines Update

Although Winter is clinging on through a series of bizarre storms here in California, the signs of the imminent change of the seasons are unmistakable. The valley floors are carpeted by a blaze of mustard flowers, and the afternoon sun breaking through the clouds is warm and strong. Spring is on it’s way, and that’s enough for us to begin craving the fresh, bright flavors that it brings.
Electric & exotic, these new wines perfectly complement the capriciousness of the turning of the seasons. The lineup includes fresh and zippy Vermentino and Pinot Blanc from the brilliant 2022 vintage, a young but feisty Syrah from 2020, and a deeply fruited Grenache from 2021.
As always, the fruit for these wines are sourced from small, family-owned vineyards using biodynamic, sustainable, and/or organic farming methods. They are whole-cluster pressed by foot, and fermented using ambient yeasts. Nothing is added or taken away, as has been our philosophy from the very beginning.
Explore the new wines below and find out why we’re over the moon about this very special release!

Grown in pure sand amongst the wind shaped dunes of The Clements Hills, The Bench Vineyard grows Syrah & Vermentino using Biodynamic farming methods. Warm dry days and cool breezy nights create wines saturated with California Sunshine but balanced by freshness and vivacity. Lots of exciting potential still to be untapped in this eastern vineyard.

If you cut your teeth on the first Kistler Chardonnays like I did, you no doubt get excited when you hear the words Shop Block.  This block was home to some of the first grapes planted on Dutton Ranch and was used by Steve Kistler to start his eponymous label. Sadly, those Chardonnay vines are long gone, but the block was replanted to Pinot Blanc in the early 2000s and the legacy lives on in this sexy little wine.

Spicy Mint • Exotic Flowers • Tobacco
As a way of becoming better acquainted with this appellation we took on some Syrah from the Yorkville Highlands to better understand the climate and soils of this dynamic place.  A series of hillsides that sits between the Cabernet Country of Alexander Valley and the Pinot Noir Paradise of Anderson Valley, we think this is a perfect place for Syrah. The distinctive soils and elevation solidify this thinking and this 2020 is proof in your glass.

Amongst all of the amazing Syrah and Pinot Noir and Chardonnay at Alder Springs Ranch is a Gorgeous terraced block of Grenache called Spirit Rock Terraces, we vinify this wine every year, most years it is blended into the Vicar bottling and some years it is just too good to blend it away.
