 Truchard Vineyards Update

2020 ESTATE CHARDONNAY

Chardonnay is located throughout the southern part of the Truchard Estate Vineyard. The vines range from 24 – 46 years old and benefit from the various marine soils, gently sloped terrain, and cooler temperatures – conditions that make the Carneros region ideal for growing Chardonnay. They produce aromatic wines with tropical fruit characteristics and a unique spicy element.
Tasting Notes:  An intense nose of pineapple, baked apples, and honeysuckle with hints of nutmeg, fig, and toasted oak. The mouth is clean and bright filled with flavors of fresh pear, quince, and lemon zest. Firm acidity provides a crisp finish of citrus, mineral, and spice.

2019 OLD BLOCK PINOT NOIR

The “Old Block” Pinot Noir is the oldest block of Pinot Noir on the Truchard Estate Vineyard. Planted in 1974 on St. George rootstock, these “Martini” selection vines have taken full advantage of the thin soils, rolling hills, and cooler temperatures of the region. They are some of the oldest vines in Carneros. This perfectly balanced vineyard consistently produces a crop of little clusters with small berries. The resulting wine exhibits an intensity, texture, and complexity that only mature vines can deliver.

Tasting Notes: A concentrated nose of wild strawberry, plum, and cranberry with a hint of framboise, tea, and earth. The mouth is rich, round, and silky with flavors of black cherry, pomegranate, and rhubarb. Firm acidity and delicate tannins focus the palate and provide a lingering finish of spice, mineral and red fruit.

2019 ESTATE CABERNET FRANC
Vintage: 2019 is very similar to the near-perfect 2018 vintage. A cold winter with average rainfall made for a late bud-break. Ideal spring weather allowed for nice berry set and above average yields. Mild conditions throughout summer and fall allowed the fruit to slowly ripen and develop maximum flavor. The wines of 2019 are bold and intense with nice structure.
Tasting Notes: A floral nose of plum, boysenberry, and cassis with hints of cedar, tobacco, and sweet vanilla. The mouth is layered with bright flavors of red currants, berry jam, and cherry. Round tannins fill the palate and provide a pleasant finish of dried red fruit and spice.

IN THE CELLAR . . .

The 2021 wines are barreled down and finished with fermentation.  Sal DeIanni, our winemaker, samples each wine to see what will make the selections for this summer’s bottlings. The wines of 2021 show great fruit and complexity – our only complaint is that there is never enough of a good thing.

IN THE VINEYARDS . . .

Spring is starting to show its burst of color with the yellow of mustards and the blossoms of wild plums throughout the fields. We are finishing up with pruning and awaiting bud break, which may be in justa a few weeks – the first step of the 2022 vintage.
