I have another rare mountain offering for you today.
As I’ve mentioned in the past, the tiny Spring Mountain AVA sits high up above Napa Valley on the eastern slopes of the Mayacamas mountains. One of the “last outposts” of Napa Valley whose wineries are still owned by small families and known for producing some of the most collectible wines by Napa insiders, the cool climates and high elevation of Spring Mountain are more responsible than any other Napa hillside for creating the mystique of “mountain grapes.”
A blend of Cabernet, Merlot, Cab Franc, and Petit Verdot, Lot 585 2015 Spring Mountain Meritage is sourced from one of the district’s pioneers with quite a rich history (that’s as detailed as I can get). Per usual with our mountain winery releases, the amount we acquired is on the smaller side – 250 cases. Featuring layers and layers of complexity and structure, this is a dense, inky wine that’s approachable now with a proper decant. A terrific value at $29 – you won’t find anything like this out there for at least twice the price.
Impenetrably black in the glass, this Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cab Franc, and Petit Verdot blend leaps out of the glass with a yin/yang bouquet of spring flowers haloing blackberry, black cherry, and black currant notes framed in fresh-turned black earth. Sensing a theme here? This inky wine is still deftly balanced on the palate, with a supple entry and impeccably balanced tannins that are quite polite given the muscular extraction of this wine. With just a few minutes, the wine opens up to reveal a juicy mid-palate that finishes with blackberry, caramel, and black cherry top notes in an epic finish. A classic Spring Mountain wine that drinks great now but will age beautifully over the next 10+ years.
