Did you know that Argentina ranks 4th in wine imports into the USA and that her main wine region, Mendoza, is home to over 800 wineries? Or that Chile, the 5th most important wine importing country into the USA, has a wine history that goes back to the 1540’s and was the primary source of wine in France during the phylloxera era of the late 19th century? Or finally, that Brazil can claim a broader range of commercially available wine grapes than any other country on the continent?
With ten of the twelve nations making up the continent producing wine, South America, blessed with lands perfectly suited to a diverse
range of grape varieties, is the most important after Europe with respect to wine- Argentina and Chile alone making up over 25% of all wines imported into the USA. The European connection is underscored by the fact that that many who settled in South America came from European countries famed for their own unique wine cultures. With a focus on quality and expressiveness, South America’s wines continue to become more refined and distinctive, rivaling the best wines of other regions around the globe with several categories becoming benchmarks (can you say Argentinean Malbec, Chilean Carmenere, or Brazilian Sparking wine?).
Join us for an exclusive three-course dinner celebrating the wine and cuisine of South America with special guest Evan Goldstein, a master sommelier and five-time James Beard Award nominee. Renowned by sommeliers as well as wine and food lovers for his expertise and breadth of knowledge in wine and food, he will guide us through the ABC’s (Argentina, Brazil, and Chile) while exploring the wines, grapes, geography, history, and cuisine of these three rich and diverse countries.
This adventurous evening will be the perfect opportunity to enhance your knowledge of South American wines (all the nerdy details that wine drinkers love to know) while indulging in the pleasures of summertime sipping and savoring—all under the guidance of an expert in the field. Goldstein is the author of several highly respected books, including ‘Wines of South America: The Essential Guide’, ‘Perfect Pairings: A Master Sommelier’s Practical Advice for Partnering Wine with Food’, and ‘Daring Pairings: A Master Sommelier Matches Distinctive Wines with Recipes from His Favorite Chefs’.
