HAPPY BIRTHDAY BOB DYLAN!
and why he is, at least in part, responsible for the wines I’ve made
In 1986, I was a junior in college in San Antonio, Texas. I was, by all accounts, a good kid. I’d not really taken any chances in life. Raised by upstanding Southern Baptist parents, taking chances really wasn’t in my DNA. But by 1986, a new wind was blowing.
I’d met a girl – who was graduating and was moving out west. I’d fallen hard for her and wasn’t sure what my senior year in college would look like without her around. Perhaps just as important – reality was starting to raise its rather ugly head. I was going to be graduating college with a degree in French history – specializing in the comparative history of the French and American prison systems. Graduate school was the only route open to me, because how was I going to get a job with that scholastic resume?
And so, there I was at home between my junior and senior years, living in my bedroom at my parents’ house, listening to "Tangled Up in Blue" on Bob Dylan’s Biography album when the idea came to me that I should go to California – for the summer at least.

I took my savings (not more than a couple of thousand dollars) and I took my suitcase, and I left one morning for the West Coast.
A lot happened that summer that changed my view on my future. Perhaps the most important was that I discovered wine – specifically Pinot Noir in the form of a $13 bottle of 1984 Rochioli Pinot Noir. Obviously, I never imagined that wine, that summer, that Bob Dylan inspiration would take me to a place where I’ve now been making wine for 30 years. But here I am, and the wines below are a product of that fateful time.
