INTRODUCING THE SANTA LUCIA HIGHLANDS (and the newest spectacular review on the 2022 Clarice Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir)

I believe that my wines begin in the vineyard. And in the vineyard means with the Franscioni and Pisoni families. In the picture above I am crushing up grape samples with Mark Pisoni and Gary Franscioni as I attempt to make a decision as to when to pick. I work closely with Mark and Gary, scheduling visits and vineyard work and ultimately, harvest.
But my relationship with the Pisonis and Franscionis goes far beyond that of grape grower and winemaker. I was fortunate enough to perform Jeff Pisoni’s wedding and I talk with Gary Franscioni every single day. And this May, Morét and I will be attending Nick Franscioni’s wedding in Italy!
Much of this doesn’t seem to be related to grape quality, but I happen to believe that a truly great wine requires something extra and this relationship with my friends, the Pisonis and Franscionis, plays an important role in elevating wine quality.
I am thrilled to offer you an opportunity to purchase the 2022 Clarice Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir. Jeb Dunnuck recently reviewed this wine and rewarded it with the highest rating he has bestowed on any Clarice Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir.

95 POINTS

"The 2022 Pinot Noir Santa Lucia Highlands has a gorgeous and intense bouquet of ripe red and black fruits (black raspberries, strawberries, currants) that gives way to more minty herbs, black tea, and sappy, floral nuances. This beauty is ripe, medium to full-bodied, has a supple, elegant mouthfeel and a rich yet still graceful and light-on-its-feet style that has so much to love. It’s beautiful today, yet I see no reason this won’t evolve for a solid decade. The 2022 is based on 60% Rosella’s Vineyard and 40% Gary’s Vineyard that was fermented with 83% stems and aged in two-thirds new French oak."

The Santa Lucia Highlands is one of wine’s hidden gems. In my experience, I think the SLH is among the finest grape growing regions in the world. When I started Clarice Wine Company, I could have literally chosen any location in the world to get my grapes, and I chose the Santa Lucia Highlands.
The SLH benefits from fabulous soils. Located mid-slope, it is above the fertile valley floor and below the thin soils near the top of the Santa Lucia Highlands mountain range. Cooling winds define the region’s growing season, starting up shortly after noon and dropping the temperatures mid-afternoon when other areas usually warm up.
There are lots of great ways to familiarize yourself with the SLH but the best is undoubtedly the annual Sun, Wind, and Wine Tasting. This year this event occurs on Saturday, May 18, 2024 at Mer Soleil Vineyards in Salinas. You can learn more about the event and purchase tickets here:

CELEBRATE WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH WITH MORÉT’S REMARKABLE WINES – AND JOIN IN THE RACE TO ZERO

March is Women’s History Month and celebrates the pivotal role that women have played in society over the ages. But what about those women that are currently making history?
I am excited about the things that Morét is doing – and not just the wines that she’s making. Certainly, she is producing great juice – being named one of Sonoma’s Top 15 Winemakers to Watch for 2024 is a testament to that. Additionally, she’s the Programs Director on the Executive Board for WineWomen – a group that promotes the remarkable achievements that women are making in wine throughout Napa and Sonoma. And she’s helping out animals with her "Stray Dogs" and "Stray Cats" labels where a percentage of the proceeds goes to animal shelters. This is just the beginning, and I truly believe that someday we will look back at Morét’s curriculum vitae and say, "we knew her when."
At the moment, there’s a "Race to Zero" going on between two of Morét’s wines. Her 2023 Rosé of Pinot Noir and her 2022 Russian River Zinfandel were both bottled around the first of the year and both have been selling incredibly quickly. Starting at around 200 cases each, there is less than 50 cases left of each wine!
Just this week Morét received more fantastic press on these two wines – this time from the renowned wine writer (and conservative scorer) John Gilman in A View from the Cellar. Here’s what he said:

2023 Morét-Brealynn Santa Lucia Highlands Rosé Of Pinot Noir – 91 POINTS!

Morét Brealynn’s 2023 Rosé Of Pinot Noir is fairly deep salmon in color. It offers up lovely vibrancy on both the nose and palate, with the bouquet wafting from the glass in a mix of blood orange, watermelon, gentle spice tones, dried rose petals, rhubarb and a pretty foundation of soil. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied and juicy, with a good core, zesty acids and lovely spice tones perking up the impressively long and bouncy finish. Good juice. 2024-2026. 91.

2023 Morét-Brealynn Russian River Valley Zinfandel – 92+ POINTS!

This is Morét Brealynn’s first bottling of Zinfandel, which she made from a parcel of seventy-five year-old vines planted in a vineyard in the Russian River Valley. Sadly, the vineyard owners grubbed up the entire vineyard after the 2022 vintage, so Morét will not have the opportunity to make wine from these old vines again. The wine comes in at 14.4 percent octane and offers up a bright and classically brambly nose of black raspberries, smoked meats, plenty of spice tones, bonfire, a touch of fresh dill and cedary oak. On the palate the wine is deep, complex and full-bodied, with lovely depth of old vine fruit, ripe tannins, tangy acids fine length and grip on the well balanced and youthfully complex finish. This is a fine bottle of zinfandel, but it will demand a bit of cellaring time to soften up those backend tannins before it drinks with true generosity. Fine juice. 2032-2060. 92+.
