Assorted wines from Around the Globe

We hope you all had a nice weekend, and we figured we start your busy week with a nice assorted offer from around the globe.  There is something for everyone in this offer, but I would like to bring your attention to the Scarecrow, Kistler & Kosta Browne offerings from California.  It’s been a while since we offered anything from California, and today’s offer has a number of some of the most sought-after wines in the market.  Don’t miss the two huge scoring Saxum bottlings nor the mag of ’04 Harlan in OWC!  For you old-world nutts, take a look at the tremendous Italian selection featuring Gaja, Sandrone, and one of our favorites Luigi Einaudi.  It’s a great offering and we expect there to be a lot of interest, so please get your orders in quickly as we will sell on a first come first serve basis.  If you are looking for wines for the cellar, don’t miss the cases of mags of ’03 & ’07 Clos des Papes or the sneaky 6 pack of ’00 Cheval Blanc.  Enjoy today’s offer and have a great week!

Cheers,

California

1985 Heitz Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon, Martha’s Vineyard

(3 bottles available @ $225 per bottle)

"…explosive richness and ripeness, as well as gobs of sweet fruit presented in a full-bodied, powerful style…"

(94pts RP, Wine Advocate)

2003 Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon

(1 bottle available @ $740 per bottle)

"…an extraordinary nose of sweet black cherry jam intermixed with licorice, spice box, and cedar. It has sensational richness, but the purity, elegance, and overall nuance of this wine are what set it apart and give it a very distinctive character all its own."

(98pts RP, Wine Advocate)

2004 Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon

(1 bottle available @ $475 per bottle)

"This is a beauty of finesse and power built for long-term aging."

(95pts RP, Wine Advocate)

2005 Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon

(2 bottles available @ $380 per bottle)

"Beautiful notes of crushed rocks, white flowers, and blue, red, and black fruits form a complex, compelling set of aromatics. The wine reveals superb richness, a full-bodied mouthfeel, excellent integration of acidity, wood, and tannin, and a terrific finish."

(96pts RP, Wine Advocate)

2006 Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon

(1 bottle available @ $355 per bottle)

"…a brilliant wine offering generous levels of black currant fruit intermixed with graphite, scorched earth, and a hint of underlying smoke. It will be surprisingly delicious early in its life but capable of lasting two-plus decades."

(94+pts RP, Wine Advocate)

2007 Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon

(3 bottle OWC available @ $1800 per 3 pack)

"It reveals a liqueur of crushed rocks intermixed with a smorgasbord of spring flower, blueberry, creme de cassis, and assorted blue, black, and red fruit characteristics. It also possesses extraordinary concentration, but what sets it apart is the fragrant aromatics combined with uncommon purity and elegance for such a full-bodied, massively concentrated wine. Its perfect balance suggests it can be drunk at a relatively young age, but it should easily evolve over 30-35 years. Congratulations to all involved!"

(100pts RP, Wine Advocate)

High End Wines Of The World

2008 Kistler Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast

(10 bottles available @ $95 per bottle)

(4 bottles available @ $175 per bottle)

(96-98pts RP, Wine Advocate)

2008 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley

(5 bottles available @ $75 per bottle)

"…showing black raspberry, oak spice, cola and dried rose qualities. Round and sappy in the mouth, offering sweet dark fruit flavors and showing no rough edges. Pretty seductive already, with very good finishing cling and an echo of cherry-cola."

(90pts ST, International Wine Cellar)

2008 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast

(5 bottles available @ $75 per bottle)

"Vibrant aromas of raspberry, spicecake and white pepper, with building florality. Sappy and sweet, with palate-caressing red and dark berry preserve flavors and good spicy snap. The floral quality repeats on the long, juicy finish, adding an exotic touch. This is already drinking well."

(90pts ST, International Wine Cellar)

2004 Harlan Estate
(1 mag OWC available @ $1150 per magnum)

"The 2004 Harlan Estate is probably the most precocious and accessible Harlan Estate that this perfectionist team has made. Already compelling, the wine has notes of roasted coffee, charcoal, blackberry, spring flowers, and some background sweet, toasty notes. Dense, fleshy, exuberant, even flamboyant by the standards of Bill Harlan, this wine exhibits no jaggedness or rough edges, has relatively high tannins, but they melt away on the palate. The wine is sensationally well-endowed, long, and rich – a tour de force in winemaking."

(98pts RP, Wine Advocate)

2007 Saxum Syrah, Bone Rock

(3 bottles available @ $195 per bottle)

"The wine is full-bodied with a liqueur of minerals (as if wet rocks were liquified and added to the fermenting grapes), a dense texture, and the vintage’s elegance, precision, freshness, and good acids, which provide lift and enhance its flamboyant, opulent style."

(98-100pts RP, Wine Advocate)

2007 Saxum Red, James Berry Vineyard

(3 bottles available @ $290 per bottle)

"Utter perfection, and one of the most profound Rhone Ranger wines I have ever tasted…It would be an amazing wine to insert in a tasting of the most profound 2007 Chateauneuf du Papes…extraordinary freshness, purity, equilibrium, and singularity of this effort is breathtaking. Full-bodied with not a hard edge to be found, it is stunningly concentrated with unreal purity, a voluptuous texture, and remarkable freshness for a wine of such power, depth, and concentration."

(100pts RP, Wine Advocate)

Italy: Campania, Piedmont, Tuscany & Veneto

2006 Terra di Lavoro, Fattoria Galardi

(24 bottles available @ $59 per bottle)

"Once again I am at a loss to capture the sheer beauty of Terra di Lavoro…remarkably elegant and pure vintage of this wine, where layers of flowers, violets, graphite, tar, smoke and black cherries continually flow from the glass in a dazzling, virtuosic display of power and finesse that is stunning."

(97pts AG, Wine Advocate)

1995 Barbaresco, Gaja

(6 bottles available @ $130 per bottle)

"Gaja’s sensational 1995s are among the stars of the vintage. This wine possesses extremely saturated dark ruby/purple colors…offers a superb nose of licorice, cherry fruit, strawberries, flowers, and toasty scents. Ripe, dense, and lush, with an alluring, sexy personality…"

(90pts RP, Wine Advocate)

1997 Barolo, Vigna Giachini, Giovanni Corino

(10 bottles available @ $75 per bottle)

"The dark plum/garnet-colored 1997 Barolo Giachini offers a luxurious bouquet of black fruits, espresso, roasted herbs, and cherry liqueur. Full-bodied and lush, with layers of glycerin, multidimensional flavors, and great persistence on the palate, this is a fabulously concentrated, compelling offering to drink now and over the next 15 years."

(94pts RP, Wine Advocate)

1998 Barbera d’Asti, Bricco della Bigotta, Braida (Giacomo Bologna)

(6 bottles available @ $40 per bottle)

1998 Langhe, Il Favot, Aldo Conterno

(5 bottles available @ $45 per bottle)

"…expressive aromas of plum, strawberry, tobacco and smoky oak. Dense and seamless; sweet and lush. Offers lovely depth of flavor and length."

(89pts ST, International Wine Cellar)

1998 Barolo, Le Vigne, Luciano Sandrone

(Two 3Ls available @ $475 per 3 liter)

"The multidimensional 1998 Barolo Le Vigne possesses huge layers of black cherry fruit infused with rose petals, tar, balsam wood, mineral, and subtle new oak notes. Full-bodied, awesomely concentrated, and extraordinarily pure, this exquisite, youthful Barolo will be at its prime between 2004-2020."

(95pts RP, Wine Advocate)

1999 Barolo, Cannubi Boschis, Luciano Sandrone

(One 3L available @ $525 per 3 liter)

"…rich sensations of spices, flowers, toasted oak and minerals along with well-delineated layers of ripe dark fruit, menthol, and eucalyptus flavors, finishing with exceptional structure, length and freshness. I didn’t taste the superb 1989 (see above) at age six, but when I tasted this 1999 on a later occasion, the first thing that came into my mind was a young version of that wine."

(95pts AG, Wine Advocate)

1999 Barbaresco, Vursu, Vigneto Valeirano, La Spinetta

(4 bottles available @ $65 per bottle)

"Good full medium red. Initially mute nose showed some superripe berry, floral and oak notes as the wine opened in the glass. The thickest and sweetest of these ’99s, but also solid and minerally. A big, rich, deep Barbaresco with a sappy core of fruit. Finishes with a spreading, palate-coating sheet of sweet tannins."

(93pts ST, International Wine Cellar)

High End Wines Of The World

2004 Barolo, Costa Grimaldi, Luigi Einaudi

(9 bottles available @ $62 per bottle)

(3 magnums available @ $135 per magnum)

(One 3L available @ $275 per 3 liter)

***LATE SUMMER ARRIVAL – PRE-ARRIVAL***

"…is a promising wine. This sweet, generous wine is endowed with an attractive plumpness to its fruit, with well-integrated oak and soft tannins that caress the palate through to the long finish. It offers superb balance, poise and harmony. Costa Grimaldi is made from the best parcels in Via Nuova vineyard in Barolo."

(91-94pts AG, Wine Advocate)

2004 Barolo, Nei Cannubi, Luigi Einaudi

(11 bottles available @ $72 per bottle)

(9 magnums available @ $155 per mag)

(One 3L available @ $315 per 3 liter)

***LATE SUMMER ARRIVAL – PRE-ARRIVAL***

“…is even more promising. It reveals a richly concentrated personality with the compelling perfumed inner sweetness that is the hallmark of this great vineyard. The wine offers terrific energy and structure, with gorgeous, silky tannins that round out the sweet, lingering finish. The Cannubi was still in oak when I tasted it in mid-November 2007.”

(92-95pts AG, Wine Advocate)

1990 Terrabianca Campaccio

(One bottle available @ $65 per bottle)

"Sexy, elegant wine with beautiful cedar, violet and berry aromas and flavors, medium body, lively acidity and fine tannins. Made from Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon."

(88pts Wine Spectator)

1995 Argiano Solengo

(One bottle available @ $75 per bottle)

"An exceptionally impressive wine…"

(92pts RP, Wine Advocate)

1995 Guado al Tasso, Antinori

(3 bottles available @ $75 per bottle)

"…knock-out nose of pain grille, black currants, licorice, and sweet, jammy cherry fruit. It is concentrated and medium-bodied, with a thick, juicy, succulent personality, and copious glycerin and sweet tannin in the long finish."

(89pts RP, Wine Advocate)

1996 Ornellaia

(12 bottles available @ $99 per bottle)

"Ornellaia is superb this year. One of the best in years, with currant and blackberry and hints of mint. Full-bodied, with excellent tannin structure and a lovely, sweet berry aftertaste."

(94pts JS, Wine Spectator)

1996 Sassicaia

(6 bottles available @ $125 per bottle)

"A well-structured Sass, with plenty of blackberry and dried herb character. Full-bodied, with plenty of ripe tannins and a currant bush and herb finish. Give it time to develop."

(91pts JS, Wine Spectator)

High End Wines Of The World

Montalcino

1990 Brunello di Montalcino, Campogiovanni (San Felice)

(4 bottles available @ $115 per bottle)

"This producer goes from strength to strength. A sensational wine, fresh and vibrant, offering marvelous blackberry, blueberry and black cherry flavors that linger for a long, long time on the palate. Sophisticated, supple, smooth finish."

(95pts Wine Spectator)

1990 Brunello di Montalcino, Vigna la Casa, Tenuta Caparzo

(2 bottles available @ $95 per bottle)

"Big and voluptuous Brunello. Aromas of plums, berries and wet earth, following through to a full body with velvety tannins and a sumptuous finish. Soft and cuddly wine."

(96pts JS, Wine Spectator)

1991 Brunello di Montalcino, Vigna la Casa, Tenuta Caparzo

(9 bottles available @ $65 per bottle)

2001 Brunello di Montalcino, Campo del Drago, Castiglion del Bosco

(6 bottles available @ $50 per bottle)

"Aromas of blackberry, dried mushroom and vanilla. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long, long finish. This really grows on the palate, with lots of layered fruit and tannins. One of the best Brunellos from this producer in a long time."

(93pts JS, Wine Spectator)

2002 Brunello di Montalcino, Castiglion del Bosco

(6 bottles available @ $40 per bottle)

"Saturated deep red with black highlights. Flamboyant aromas of ripe plum, chestnut and quinine show a smoky, mocha quality… demonstrates impressive power…Finishes with fine-grained tannins and a reasonably long finish."

(88pts ID, International Wine Cellar)

1990 Amarone della Valpolicella, Bolla

(2 bottles available @ $50 per bottle)

"Continues to improve. The plum and smoke notes have evolved to prune and leather, and it’s a bit firmer than I remember it last, with a tannic, chewy, sweet fruit finish. A solid effort…Better than previously reviewed."

(89pts BS, Wine Spectator)

1996 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico, Allegrini

(2 magnums available @ $150 per magnum)

"Very impressive, an unquestionably fine dry red. The outstanding, dark purple-colored 1996 Amarone offers a knock-out nose of wood charcoal intermixed with black truffles, melted asphalt, blackberries, and roast beef. Amazingly rich and full-bodied, but not heavy, this chewy, thick, exceptionally pure, harmonious offering should drink well for 10-15+ years. Its low acidity and gorgeously ripe fruit provide immediate accessibility."

(95pts RP, Wine Advocate)

Rhone & Unico from Spain

1983 Hermitage Blanc, J. L. Chave

(3 bottles available @ $269 per bottle)

"Very aromatic with a wonderful variety of scents (honeysuckle, pineapple, stony minerals), this is a graceful wine that balances power with finesse. Chave says he will not drink it until 1995."

(90pts RP, Wine Advocate)

1989 Hermitage Blanc, J. L. Chave

(3 bottles available @ $145 per bottle)

"The 1989 Hermitage Blanc is low in acidity, expansive, and weighty, and makes for a huge, chewy mouthful of white wine. The honeyed, somewhat unctuous personality of the wine is more dominant in the 1989 than in the 1988, but there remains the head-turning, beautiful, flowery aromas, sensational concentration, super ripeness, and low acidity. Chave believes the latter component is always a characteristic of the greatest Hermitage vintages."

(92pts RP, Wine Advocate)

1989 Hermitage, La Chapelle, P. Jaboulet

(3 magnums available @ $525 per magnum)

"This fabulous, blockbuster has been totally unevolved since bottling, but at the Jaboulet tasting, it was beginning to reveal some of its formidable potential. A saturated opaque purple color is followed by aromas of cassis, minerals, and hot bricks/wood fire. Super-ripe and full-bodied, with a massive mid-section, teeth-staining extract, and mouth-searing tannin, it is a monster-sized La Chapelle. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2050."

(96pts RP, Wine Advocate)

1991 Ribera del Duero, Unico Reserva, Bodegas Vega Sicilia

(3 bottles available @ $285 per bottle)

***JUNE ARRIVAL – PRE-ARRIVAL***

"…gorgeous, deep ruby/purple-colored, remarkably youthful effort offering sweet vanilla notes intertwined with black currants, cherry liqueur, flowers, spice box, and tobacco leaves."

(95pts RP, Wine Advocate)

2003 Chateauneuf du Pape, Clos des Papes

(6 magnums available @ $235 per magnum)

"The 2003 Clos des Papes Chateauneuf du Pape (the # 2 wine in the Wine Spectator’s annual winefest) has long been one of the most profound wines of the vintage. It somehow manages to offer the vintage’s character in power, high glycerin, and huge volume, but retains remarkable elegance and finesse that is so much in keeping with the style of Clos des Papes. The wine has a dense ruby/purple-tinged color and a wonderfully sweet nose of framboise, blackberry, and kirsch liqueur intermixed with Chinese black tea and licorice. The wine is full-bodied and voluptuous, but once past all the glycerin and beautiful, dense fruit of this full-bodied wine, there is striking purity, elegance, finesse, and surprising freshness. Still primary, it looks set to have a long life of 20-25 or more years."

(97pts RP, Wine Advocate)

2007 Chateauneuf du Pape, Clos des Papes

(Three 6 magnum OCBs available @ $2094 per 6 magnum case)

"…I believe is the greatest Chateauneuf du Pape made since 1978 and 1990, the 2007. I have not only tasted this wine at the estate, but I purchased it for my cellar, and have now drunk it on three separate occasions out of bottle. It is unquestionably one of the great Chateauneufs of my lifetime, and I suspect it will merit a three digit score after another 3-4 years of cellaring. Still slightly restrained because of its recent bottling, but wow, what potential complexity, mind-boggling richness, and compelling flavor profile are apparent. It is a sublime expression of the art of winemaking as evidenced by its dense purple color and big, sweet kiss of kirsch, framboise, blackberries, licorice, roasted herbs, and smoked meat. It hits the palate with a fascinating combination of substance, power, full-bodied authority yet extraordinary freshness, elegance, and precision."

(99+pts RP, Wine Advocate)

A very Special Bordeaux

High End Wines Of The World

2000 Cheval Blanc
(6 bottle OWC available @ $6150 per 6 bottle original wood case)

"Opulent and full-bodied, with low acidity, sweet tannin, and a 60-second finish, it is unquestionably as profound as the 1990 and 1982. I still believe the 2000 has the potential to be the most compelling Cheval Blanc since the mythical 1947 and 1949, but patience is required. It should merit a three digit score in 7-10 years, but it is closed at present. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030+. Note: The score for this wine was 98 in The Wine Advocate but it is changed to 100 per Mr. Parker as of August, 2006."

(100pts RP, Wine Advocate)
