Far from the star-studded slopes of his native Burgundy, Maxime Magnon is quietly producing some of the most dynamic wines in all of France. After studying under Jean Foillard in Morgon, Maxime set up shop in in the tiny commune of Villeneuve-les-Corbières in the Languedoc in 2002 and has pieced together an impressive set of holdings of old vines that he farms organically. Though most in the area prefer the ease of working the more gently sloped lowlands, Maxime has gone the opposite direction. His vines are planted on the steep, rocky upper reaches of the appellation, where hands-on vineyard management is arduous but is paying serious dividends in the magical bottles coming out of his cellar.
Like the wines of his mentor, Magnon’s bottles are vibrant & exceptionally drinkable in all their wild youthful vigor, though they are more than capable of improving with gusto over the mid term in the cellar. We have two different reds from Magnon today – Rozeta & Campagnes. Rozeta is a co-fermented field blend from 50+ year old vines centered on Carignan, with Grenache, Syrah, Grenache Gris, Macabou and Terret as the supporting cast. It’s a bright, see-through color and comes across as buoyant and lively straight away. A pure, chillable delight that is refreshing and full of intrigue. Campagnes is almost entirely Carigan with a tiny amount of the other above referenced varieties from vines that are more than 100 years old. The depth and intensity provided by these special vines is immediately evident even on your first sip. This a profoundly mineral, impressively concentrated wine that shows darker fruits, power and length in spades. It’s a wonderfully silky example with tension and freshness to balance its strong character and looks poised to unfold magically over the years.
Maxime is a young man in great form whose devotion to unleashing the immense potential of this obscure area is going to be great fun to witness.
