TASTING WINES

Giovanni Almondo Roero Arneis Vigne Sparse 2017
The sandy soil of north Piemonte is home to the appellation Roero and the indigenous variety, Arneis. Giovanni Almondo is a master of the rare variety, crafting aromatic and mineral wines that rival any of the best white wines in Italy. The 2017 Vigne Sparse dazzles right out of the bottle; floral and fruity yet with a chalky mineral streak. The mid-palate has layers of concentrated citrus fruit and the finish is stony and a minute long.   Pair this wine as you would with a steely white burgundy, with roasted chicken, delicate fish dishes or veal scallopine.
Domaine Corsin Saint Veran Vieilles Vignes 2015
Giles Corsin is one of the great farmers and vignerons of the Maconnais. His 8 hectare of immaculate, naturally tended vines are in the mid-slope of the hillsides vineyards above the villages of Davayé and Fuissé.  This wine is one of two bottlings of Saint Veran at Corsin. This cuveé is vinified completely in stainless steel tanks and then aged in barrique for 6 months. The result is a balanced Chardonnay, filled with mineral-laced green-apple/Asian pear aromas and flavors yet rich and long on the palate. Bracing acidity provides a super long finish and wonderful food-friendliness. 720 cases produced
Stolpman Vineyards Roussanne 2016
The organically farmed estate of the Stolpman family is situated on the limestone hills of Ballard Canyon in Santa Ynex Valley. The limestone is an utter rarity in California and it is one of the secrets to their aromatically complex, dynamically vibrant wines. Their estate Roussanne is a rich, hedonistic white, with lime blossom and honeysuckle in the nose, leading to flavors of peach and apricot. Best with rich seafood.
Weingut Ratzenberger Riesling Kabinett Feinherb Bacharacher 2016
This is fruity Rhein Riesling of sumptuous fruit flavors (tangerine, peaches, ruby red grapefruit), stern acidity, and classic mineral and spicy flavors imparted by the steep slopes of the Bachrach. The vineyard, its soil comprised entirely of black Devon slate, has an incredible capacity to produce powerful, mineral-laden and long-lived Riesling.  Pair with roasted turkey, sausages and salmon. Drink now-2026!
Domaine de la Citadelle Côtes du Luberon Rosé Le Châtaignier 2017
Situated on the northern slopes of the Luberon mountains, 35km east of Avignon and the confluence of the Rhône and the Durance rivers, Domaine de la Citadelle has 40 hectares of vines; divided into approximately 65 different parcels. The vineyard is planted with a total of 14 different grape varieties, each farmed organically. The wines of the domaine are generous and full-bodied, with complex aromas and great length. Le Châtaignier is terrific, dry Rosé, fresh and fruity, perfect with anything you would cook on the deck this spring and summer.
Domaine Giles Gelin Fleurie 2015
Giles Gelin organically tends 15 HA in Fleurie in southern Burgundy. Ancient vines of Gamay rooted in a granitic sand provide for wild aromatics and intense fruit in the finished wine. On the palate, the wine is layered and complex with a core of black and red berry flavors. This is fresh, lively, complex red Burgundy, perfect with a roasted beef,  ham or turkey.
Better Half Pinot Noir

Bright and lively ruby red. This youthful and fruit-driven Pinot Noir shows dark cherry and cranberry aromas which gradually open to reveal subtle dried herb notes and hints of cocoa. With a palate full of vibrant bright fruit, this wine exhibits prune and dark cherry flavors combined with earthy, savory undertones.
Siduri Pinot Noir

Since Siduri’s inception in 1994, their focus has laser-sharp…they make plush, fruit-forward, hedonistic Pinot Noir. The Yamhill-Carlton cuvee shows off the best Oregon in a killer vintage…aromatically complex wine, with a deep core of berried-up fruitiness and a lingering finish that is fresh and long. We serve it in the restaurant with bold, brightly flavored dishes….at home, I’d bust out the ribs and the juicy burgers with this one.
Vina Burgunda Rioja Crianza 2014
Vina Bujanda Rioja Crianza 2014 marries juicy, blackberry fruit, with a savory tone and silky tannins to create the perfect candidate for a Spanish house red. Sourced from iron-rich clay soils in the Rioja sub-zones of Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Alta, Vina Bujanda’s sustainably farmed old-vines produce fresh reds that are perfect with cuisine of spring and summer. Pair with anything off the grill; burgers, steaks and lamb chops for sure and after dinner, with any kind of Alpine-styled cow’s milk cheese.
Domaine du Colibri Côtes du Ventoux Le Petit Tour 2016
Nested between the Dentelles de Montmirail and the Mont Ventoux, Olivier Legranger’s vineyard spans 10 hectares around the village of Caromb. Ideally located halfway between the Alps and the Mediterranean Sea, his organically farmed parcels are on the western face of the Mont Ventoux.  The vines grow on limestone and in a dreamlike microclimate with an exceptional amount of sunlight all year round. The infamous Mistral wind helps keep the vines healthy while occasionally driving him insane with well over 100 km/hr gusts…Olivier’s first release of red wine is a blend of Carignane and Grenache juicy and fresh, a great candidate for a house red this spring.
Château Roque le Mayne Côtes de Castillon 2015
Jean-Francois Meynard naturally farms 15 hectares of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec vines on the classic argilo-calcaire soil of the Cotes de Castillon. The minerality in the soil perfectly balances the incredible concentration of fruit Meynard coaxes from his vines. The 2015 vintage is marked by an intense purple color, complex aromatics of cassis and sweet herbs and a lengthy finish, one usually reserved for wine twice its price. Roque le Mayne is a steal, delicious today yet with the breed and stuffing to improve in the bottle for up to 10 years. If you can’t resist the killer fruit, pair with grilled lamb chops or any juicy burger.
Maurizio Lambardi Rosso di Montalcino 2015
The story of the Lambardi family – once quality farmers in a small, family-run estate in the hills of southern Tuscany, today producers of broad, elegant wines – is the story of Brunello. Invented no more than 60 years ago with the isolation of a specific clone of Sangiovese, Brunello has rapidly become a very important style of wine, fully representative of the generous flavors of Tuscany.  The 2015 Rosso is rich and complex with aromas of Asian spices, red fruit and leather. Earthy yet so fine, pair with mushroom risotto. Drink now-2025.
Domaine Saint Amant Beaumes de Venise Rouge Grangeneuve 2015
Saint Amant an amazing find. It is a 13 hectare estate, precariously planted at 1800 feet in elevation, in the humble village of Beaumes de Venise. The high elevation and mineral soil provide ideal conditions for aromatic and elegant Viognier and complex, fine blends of Grenache and Syrah.   Proprietress, Camille Wallut, enjoys the benefits of the high elevation….organic farming is easier then down in the valley as the vines constantly battered by the wind, taking with it tons of bugs and the possibility of mildew. Second, it’s much cooler at night, allowing grapes to retain acidity so ripening happens more slowly, allowing for more complex aromatics and fresher wine. Her wines are always aromatic firework shows, the 2015 CDR Grangeneuve, is a showstopper and the perfect accompaniment to a roasted leg of lamb on Easter Sunday.
Sueno Profundo Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2015
Ry Richards refined his hand crafting complex, vibrant Cabernet Sauvignon under the tutelage of Phil Titus at Chappellet Vineyards. At Sueno Profundo, Ry’s new brand, the goal was the same…crafting lush Cabernet with fine tannin that speak to its place of origin. The Napa Valley cuveé comes from two well-drained vineyards on the eastern side of the valley. That gravelly soil is key here, roots dig deep in poor soil, bringing terrific minerality and freshness up to the grapes. The result is a knock-out $35 Cabernet, loaded with fresh, juicy black fruit, perfect with grilled beef or with just a hunk of cheese. 500 cases produced.
