More on Tua Rita:

Tua Rita is one of Italy’s iconic Tuscan estates. They gained legendary status beginning in 1984 when Rita Tua and Virgilio Bisti purchased the estate; a major advance came in 1988 when they introduced Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot to the land, which is rich in clay and silt. Their first major breakthrough came when the 1992-1997 vintages of Giusto dei Notri, a Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend, were unanimously deemed spectacular. Their position among the great wines was further cemented into history when their flagship Redigaffi it became just the second wine in history to receive 100-points from Robert Parker and the Wine Advocate. Today, Tua Rita has achieved cult status among fine wine connoisseurs offering stunning hedonistic reds at all price points.

If you are new to Tua Rita, it should be noted that next to Ornellaia’s Masseto and Le Macchiole’s Messorio, Tua Rita’s flagship Redigaffi is perhaps Italy’s greatest 100% Merlot. While Pomerol’s eminent names of Pétrus (95–100%), Le Pin (90–100%), L’Eglise-Clinet (80%), Trotanoy (90%), have set the benchmark for great Merlot, it should be noted that that these reference points of the Right Bank are often blends (as indicated by the percentages noted above).  And unfortunately these wines command obscene prices. Nevertheless, they almost always carry a mystique that overshadows other quintessential expressions of the noble varietal.

Enter Toscana: specifically, the southern region of the Maremma and, to be exact, Bolgheri. Here, the coastal Merlot stars are Redigaffi, Masseto, and Messorio. These are pinnacle monovarietal expressions of Merlot, produced in minute levels that powerfully signify the painstaking artisanal craft they entail. Take a look at Pétrus. On average, it turns out a 4,000-case production. In contrast, Redigaffi and Messorio typically produce 600 cases. Even Masseto, at 2,000 cases, is substantially lower. Move on to the issue of price, and you encounter Bordeaux wines that quadruple the prices of Italy’s iconic Merlots. Like the Pomerol cult wines, these Merlots have distinguished themselves in this competitive category by delivering substantive and complex expressions that offer sumptuous lushness in concert with exceptional structure and ageworthiness.

We expect this event to sell out quickly, be sure to reserve your spot. Mention ZACHYS at checkout for special pricing.

All my best,
Andrew
