    SPRING 2012

95 Point Pinot Grows in the Petaluma Gap
The Petaluma Gap is a cool windy grape growing region in the south-east corner of the Sonoma Coast appellation and has proven to be an ideal place for growing distinctive Pinot noir. Sojourn Cellars’ three flagship single-vineyard Pinot noirs are all produced from vineyards within the Petaluma Gap, and our Sonoma Coast appellation wine is a blend primarily of wines from these vineyards as well:

    • 2010 Sonoma Coast Pinot noir – rated 95 points!
    • 2010 Sangiacomo Vineyard Pinot noir – rated 95 points!
    • 2010 Gap’s Crown Vineyard Pinot noir – rated 94 points!
    • 2010 Rodgers Creek Vineyard Pinot noir – rated 92 points!

Wind and fog are the Petaluma Gap’s trademark. The "Gap" is actually a wind gap named after a coastal mountain opening that stretches from the Pacific – east through the town of Petaluma and then roars south. Each day, as the inland valley air heats up, it pulls the cool coastal air into a naturally formed 15-mile-wide "gap" in the coastal range mountains. The wind flows off the ocean between Tomales Bay and Bodega Bay, builds up speed as it funnels through the gap, then empties into San Francisco Bay.
The daily weather pattern goes something like this: Early-to-mid-morning finds a distinctive crisp coolness and a blanket of fog. By late morning the sun has chased away the fog and the temperatures rises. By mid-afternoon, however, the cool breezes return, flowing west to east, picking up speed as the afternoon progresses and bringing in the almost nightly fog. There are daily temperature swings of forty to fifty degrees. This cooling "wind tunnel" effect means the vineyard yields are smaller and grapes ripen later, developing wonderful flavors and fruit characteristics, while maintaining ideal levels of acidity. It’s the perfect recipe for intense, but well-balanced, Pinot noir wines and gives the term "micro-climate" real meaning.
