Volcanic Soils in Upper Carneros:
The key to our delicious Syrah and Zinfandel!

Carneros is a world-class region known for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, because of its cool climate and clay soils. However, in the northern sections of this amazing AVA there are some volcanic soils from all the geological activity that has occurred over centuries.
One particular site – a block we call "The Rocks" – is where Syrah and Zinfandel grow and thrive. As a child working in the vineyards, I remember struggling to keep my feet from falling out from underneath me as my brother and I carried grape stakes up and down the steep hillside where rocks the size of marbles were rolling beneath our feet.  Every time I walk this section of the vineyards, located on the northern part of our property and dominated by these unique soils, it always brings me back to those moments helping my dad. Little did I think I would be enjoying the fruits of my labor as an adult.
Vastly different then the classic Carneros clay, these volcanic soils contribute to remarkable wines and remarkable memories.  While working in the cellar, I learned what this meant for the wine that we would eventually put into the bottle.  The well-drained “Rocks” produce wines with dark fruit and spice. Tasting and experiencing these wines is a continual reminder to me that it all begins with the soil.

2020 Estate Syrah

Perched high on the ridges of the volcanic veins, the roots of these vines struggle to find water and nutrients in the austere volcanic soils.  But their pain is our gain, as it is this effort that produces small flavorful berries and yields some of our favorite wines.  We have been growing syrah on our estate since 1989 but only a few sites and barrels make the cut into our Estate Syrah.

2020 Estate Zinfandel

One of the very few Zinfandels grown in Carneros. Because of the unique site and soils of our vineyards, we are able to produce an outstanding and unique version of this variety, which leans to more spice and berry flavors with a touch of black pepper.  This is a perfect wine to have with pasta, pizza or any hearty dish. Only 250 cases produced.
