Our Tempranillo and the History of Boot Lake
When it comes to wine, location matters. Our Tempranillo is planted near one of the most treasured locations on the estate: Boot Lake. This secluded section of our property can usually be seen only by tractor or on foot as it is on a steep volcanic knoll that makes it inaccessible to most vehicles.
The lake is famous for its fishing – particularly catfish. It is situated just over the hill from the city of Napa. When kids of the pre-internet era would roam the countryside of Napa, they would crest the hill separating the town from county and look down into this little valley. The oddly shaped lake resembles an old man’s boot. Over the years, fences and a growing city caused the lake to be mostly forgotten by the townspeople. It had long been a neighboring property to Tony and Jo Ann, and Anthony II remembers ducking below a barbed wire fence to sneak in some fishing time on warm afternoons. The Truchard family purchased the property in 1996, and after studying the soils and the exposures, decided to branch out from the typical Napa varieties and plant a bit of Tempranillo.2018 Estate Tempranillo
Our Tempranillo is a true Californian expression of this Spanish grape and is indicative of the expansive versatility of Carneros and specifically the Truchard estate. It is a unique, spicy wine, with deep purple color, lush texture, and firm acidity. Expressive flavors of berries, plum, tobacco, vanilla, leather and herbs round out a silky smooth finish.
In cases you missed it, we also just released another spectacular wine of ours: the 2021 Estate Roussanne!
Roussanne is the absolute go-to pairing with any meal or celebration in our household! This white variety has been traditionally grown in the Northern Rhône, where it is blended with Marsanne to make white Hermitage wines. In 1998, three acres of Roussanne were planted on the southern end of the Truchard Estate Vineyard. Growing in soils composed of volcanic rock and ash, the vines benefit from the gently sloped terrain and cooler Carneros temperatures. Roussanne is a challenging grape in both the vineyard and winery. However, when handled correctly, as when in the hands of our incredible winemaker Sal, it can produce an aromatic and delicate wine with the structure and finesse to age.
