Celebrating our Newest Release

2013 Estate Tempranillo

When it comes to wine, location matters. One of my treasured locations in our vineyards is the Tempranillo block called “Boot Lake”. This secluded section of our property can usually be seen only by tractor or on foot as it is on a steep volcanic knoll that makes it inaccessible to most vehicles.
The lake is famous for its fishing, particularly catfish. It is situated just over the hill from the city of Napa. When kids of the pre-internet area would roam the hills of Napa, they would crest the hill separating town from country and look down into this little valley. The oddly shaped lake resembles an old man’s boot. Fences and cosset parenting have caused the lake to be mostly forgotten by the townspeople. It had long been a neighboring property and I remember from time to time, jumping over or ducking below a barbed wire fence to get a few lines thrown into the water myself, albeit without much success. My family purchased the property in 1996, and after studying the soils and the exposures decided to branch out and plant a bit of Tempranillo.
We planted an acre and a half on a volcanic knoll located on the northwest banks of Boot Lake. The austere soils there, which are practically dry farmed, help tame the vigorous Tempranillo vines. Despite its name deriving from Temp or ”Early”, we harvest mid-October in a normal year to allow the fruit to fully mature.
Tempranillo is the noble grape of Spain, and we found that mimicking the long bottle aging techniques of Spain prior to release allowed us to enhance the flavors and textures of our Tempranillo. This wine, after one year in barrel and three years in bottle, is released on July 6th which kicks off the “Running of the Bulls” in Pamplona, Spain – a hat tip to the grape’s Spanish heritage. The long aging time on this particular wine rewards you with rich aromas of black cherry, cranberry, and cassis with hints of tea, cedar, and earth. The mouth has bright flavors of plum, boysenberry, and sweet vanilla. We hope you enjoy this Tempranillo planted on the banks of a forgotten lake.

Cheers,
